When is the best time to see elephants in Botswana?
The best time to see elephants in Botswana is during the dry season, typically from May to October, when water becomes scarce and large herds concentrate around permanent rivers, lagoons and marshes. The dry vegetation also improves visibility, making it easier to observe elephants bathing, feeding and interacting socially. That said, the green season (November to April) also offers excellent sightings and more affordable holiday options, but with more dispersed movements and a lush, more atmospheric landscape, which is great for elephant photography on safari.

In Botswana, Wilderness offers a wide variety of elephant safari experiences, each designed to bring you closer to these remarkable animals. Traditional 4x4 game drives are a constant in mornings and afternoons, with many of our private safari concessions also allowing for night drives.
In the Okavango Delta and Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, mokoro excursions and boat safaris provide a completely different perspective, where elephants can be seen wading, swimming, or drinking along the waterways.
Some of our safari camps also feature specialist photographic hides, where you can see elephants from eye level at a waterhole, while expert-led walking safaris allow for watching elephants at a distance. Some Wilderness camps in Botswana also offer sleep-out experiences, where you could drift off to sleep listening to the sounds of elephants moving through the night under open skies.
What type of elephants do you see in Botswana?
Botswana is home to African savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana), the largest land mammals on Earth. These elephants are known for their impressive size, complex social structures and highly intelligent behaviour.
On a safari in Botswana, you can encounter breeding herds of elephants, made up of related females and their young, as well as impressively large, solitary bulls that roam independently or in loose bachelor groups. Some bulls in regions like the Linyanti are particularly famous for their large tusks.
Are elephant sightings guaranteed in Botswana?
While elephant sightings can never be guaranteed, in Botswana elephants are exceptionally reliable, particularly in the parts of the Okavango Delta, Linyanti Wildlife Reserve and Mababe Depression where Wilderness operates safari camps amongst some of the highest elephant populations in Africa. At many of our camps, elephants are seen daily, often moving through or near the main lodge area due to the unfenced nature of our camp designs.
