The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of East Africa’s most iconic safari destinations and a superb place to see African savannah elephants. The ecosystem supports a healthy resident population of around 3,000 individuals with herds found between the open plains and riverine woodlands. At certain times of the year, especially when conditions are dry between June and October, elephants congregate in larger groupings near the Mara River and its tributaries, creating unforgettable viewing opportunities, including directly in front of Wilderness Mara. Staying in the Mara Triangle allows for a quieter experience, with only two lodges in the area and strict caps on the number of vehicles at sightings.

The best time to see elephants in Kenya is during the dry season, typically from June to October when water becomes scarce and elephants concentrate around permanent rivers and waterholes. This time of year, is also great for combining elephants with the vast wildebeest and zebra herds of the Great Migration. The reduced vegetation during these months also makes it easier to observe elephants. That said, the green or rainy season also offers a beautiful elephant experience, with lush landscapes and newborn antelope calves, while moody skies allow for great elephant photography opportunities.

What type of elephant safaris can you do in Kenya?
