From the vast dunes of Sossusvlei, to the rugged Kunene and Hoanib regions, Wilderness’ camps offer the chance to see a different side of Africa.

From Wilderness’ safari lodges in Namibia, you can watch desert-adapted elephants navigate the dry riverbed of the Hoanib, track rare desert-adapted black rhino in Damaraland, fly or drive to the wild Skeleton Coast and meet a Himba community in the remote far north of the country. Add beautifully designed accommodation, all-inclusive stays, a wide variety of activities, excellent food and wine, exceptional guiding, and a deep commitment to conservation, and it’s no surprise that these destinations are consistently ranked among the best safari lodges in Namibia.

Wilderness Little Kulala

Wilderness Little Kulala is an award-winning safari lodge set in the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve in the heart of the Namib Desert. The big draw is its proximity to Sossusvlei, with a private, early-access gate that allows guests to reach the famous dunes before the crowds. In addition, guided drives, quad-bike excursions and nature walks reveal the surprising life of the desert around camp. This Namibian safari lodge has 11 elegant suites each with their own private plunge pool and rooftop viewing platform. A rollout bed on the deck below gives you the option of spending a night beneath Namibia’s spectacular star-filled skies.

Wilderness Kulala Desert Lodge

Set within the vast Kulala Wilderness Reserve, Kulala Desert Lodge is Little Kulala’s bigger, and more affordable, sister. Its location provides the same easy, early access to Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, while the surrounding reserve offers plenty to discover, from towering dunes and gravel plains to animals that have adapted to life in this arid environment. Days are spent exploring with expert guides, tracking wildlife and learning about the remarkable ecology of the desert, before returning to spacious, air-conditioned accommodation and a swimming pool overlooking the landscape. It is an excellent choice for travellers who want to easily experience the Namib Desert without sacrificing the comforts of a proper lodge.

Best lodge for a real Namibia conservation safari experience

Wilderness Desert Rhino

Set in the rugged desert landscapes of the Palmwag Concession, Wilderness Desert Rhino offers the chance to experience one of Namibia’s most remarkable conservation success stories. The area is home to the last population of free-roaming desert-adapted black rhino, and tracking these elusive animals on foot with expert guides is a highlight of any stay. The experience is about much more than rhino, however, with opportunities to see desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, and a variety of smaller wildlife. Once a research station, the camp itself is deliberately intimate, with just a handful of spacious Meru-style tents surrounded by dramatic mountains and vast open plains. For adventurous travellers who value exceptional wildlife encounters and a real conservation story, this is one of the best choices for a safari lodge in Namibia.

Best safai for remote desert adventures and culture

Wilderness Serra cafema

Reaching Wilderness Serra Cafema is an adventure in itself, with the camp tucked away on the banks of the Kunene River in Namibia’s remote north-west. Here, the lush ribbon of riverine vegetation provides a striking contrast to the stark desert of the Hartmann’s Valley, creating a landscape unlike almost anywhere else in Namibia. Explore by boat, vehicle or on foot, looking for desert-adapted oryx, zebra and even crocodiles in the Kunene, while cultural experiences provide an opportunity to learn more about the Himba, one of Namibia’s last semi-nomadic communities. This Namibian safari lodge offers a beautiful riverside setting and a remarkable sense of isolation.

Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast

Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast is an ideal base for exploring this photogenic country, with game drives, nature walks and excursions to the wild Skeleton Coast offering very different perspectives of Namibia. Beyond the seals and shipwrecks of the coast, you also have a chance of seeing the desert-adapted elephants, lions and brown hyenas that roam freely in these vast landscapes. With just a small number of tents and very little else for miles around, Hoanib Skeleton Coast is an excellent choice for travellers looking for a true off-the-beaten-track safari. It is the combination of unusual wildlife, dramatic scenery and genuine remoteness that makes this one of Namibia’s most memorable safari lodges.

Wilderness Damaraland

Wilderness Damaraland is set in the spectacular Huab River Valley, surrounded by ancient mountains, open plains and some of Namibia’s most dramatic desert scenery. The area is particularly famed for its desert-adapted elephants, which move through the dry riverbeds in search of food and water, while oryx, springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebra and giraffe are also found here. But wildlife is only part of the appeal. Guided walks and drives reveal the region’s fascinating geology and ancient rock art, while visits to nearby communities offer a glimpse into life in this remote corner of Namibia. With just 10 elevated adobe-style thatched suites, sweeping views and wonderfully dark skies, Damaraland is an excellent choice for travellers who want to combine wildlife with landscape, culture and a genuine sense of wilderness.

Wilderness Doro Nawas

This safari lodge’s position in the private Doro !Nawas Conservancy, Namibia's first community conservancy, makes it an excellent base for exploring the region. The area is also known for its ancient rock engravings, while guided walks offer a closer look at the geology, plants and smaller creatures that survive here. Back at camp, the simple, clean design of the public spaces make the most of its extraordinary setting, with uninterrupted views across the surrounding wilderness. Doro Nawas is particularly appealing to travellers who want to explore as much of Namibia as possible, as the airstrip here provides a central hub for reaching even more of the country’s remote safari lodges.
