Best time to visit Namibia for a safari

The best time to visit Namibia for a safari is July through October. Due to its desert climate Namibia remains dry for most of the year, but this is particularly true during these months, especially in Etosha National Park, the country’s premier wildlife destination. The massive Etosha Pan is dry during this time, causing wildlife to gather around permanent waterholes, and the vegetation is sparse, making animals much easier to spot. Cooler daytime temperatures also make game drives more comfortable, although night-time temperatures can drop below freezing.

That said, Namibia’s landscapes remain spectacular throughout the year. If you're hoping to experience the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei or the dramatic landscapes of the Skeleton Coast, then you can rest assured of a great experience no matter the time of year. The cooler months from May to September are particularly enjoyable for climbing dunes and exploring the desert on foot, with crystal-clear winter skies making this one of the world's best destinations for stargazing. 

Travelling between November and April means warmer temperatures, so if you’re planning to spend some time poolside or want to sleep out on the roof of your suite, a magical experience offered at many of our Namibian camps, then this may be a better time for you to travel. Occasional rains bring new life to the landscape, while many animals give birth during the summer months and birders will enjoy seeing the many migratory species. 

Namibia in December–February

December through February bring occasional rains to Namibia, transforming parts of the country with fresh grass and wildflowers. While wildlife in Etosha National Park becomes more dispersed as water is more readily available, and the famed pan fills with a shallow layer of water, game drives remain rewarding, particularly for birdwatchers as migratory species arrive. This is also the season when many antelopes give birth, bringing new life to the plains and attracting predators.

Sossusvlei's towering dunes remain as spectacular as ever, although daytime temperatures can be extremely hot, making sunrise and sunset excursions the most comfortable option. But along the Skeleton Coast, the cool sea breeze provides welcome relief from the inland heat. If your dream is to sleep beneath Namibia's famously dark skies in a Star Bed, clear nights are still common and the warmer nights make this a more comfortable experience. This is also a wonderful time for making use of the beautiful pools at our Namibian safari lodges, particularly at Wilderness Little Kulala where each suite comes with its own private plunge pool and sleep-out deck.

March through May is one of the best times to visit Namibia. The summer heat eases off but the landscapes still retain some greenery. It's an excellent season for anyone wanting to experience the country's remarkable variety on an extended safari, taking time to enjoy everything from Etosha's wildlife to the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, outside of peak-season pricing.

Wildlife sightings improve steadily as water sources begin to shrink, while the cooler weather makes exploring places like Dead Vlei and Sesriem Canyon far more enjoyable. This is also a wonderful time to visit the Skeleton Coast and Damaraland, where clear days are ideal for searching for desert-adapted elephants and enjoying scenic drives through Namibia's vast open landscapes. A cultural visit to a Himba community in the Kunene region is possible throughout the year, but the milder temperatures make spending time outdoors more comfortable. 

June through August is widely regarded as the best time to visit Namibia for a safari. The dry winter weather concentrates wildlife around permanent waterholes in Etosha National Park, making it much easier to spot elephants, lions, rhinos, and large herds of plains game. Days are sunny and comfortable, while mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cold, particularly in the desert.

At Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp in the Palmwag Conservancy, cooler temperatures make guided walks tracking Critically Endangered black rhino on foot far more enjoyable. Damaraland also offers excellent opportunities to search for desert-adapted elephants. With almost no cloud cover, this is arguably the finest time of year for stargazing, just be prepared for the cold if you plan to spend a night sleeping alfresco. 

The popularity of these months means accommodation can fill up well in advance, so early booking is recommended.

Just before the rains arrive, animals become increasingly dependent on the remaining waterholes, creating exceptional opportunities to see large herds of wildlife in Etosha or find rare desert-adapted creatures. Predator sightings are often at their best during this period, and photographers are rewarded with dramatic scenes of animals browsing in Namibia's dusty landscapes.

As the year draws on it can be extremely hot, particularly in the northern regions, but early morning activities help avoid the midday heat. By November, isolated thunderstorms begin to build, bringing a sense of anticipation and beautiful skies, although increased cloud cover can occasionally hamper stargazing.
