Bisate Lodge is a six-villa luxury lodge at the foot of Rwanda's Virunga volcanoes, within walking distance of Volcanoes National Park — Africa's premier mountain gorilla habitat. Each villa is built as an architectural homage to Rwanda's traditional royal homes, with volcanic stone walls, vaulted thatched roofs, and panoramic views of Mounts Bisoke, Karisimbi, and Mikeno. Bisate is consistently awarded as one of Africa's top lodges and holds the continent's most ambitious active reforestation programme on its grounds. It is widely considered the finest base for gorilla trekking in Africa.

Bisate Lodge is positioned closer to the Volcanoes National Park gorilla sector than any other premium camp in Rwanda — guests are literally walking distance from the park's trailhead. Trekking permits are managed by Wilderness' Rwanda team, and Bisate's guides have deep local knowledge of gorilla family territories and movement patterns. Bisate has the highest concentration of gorilla trekking expertise of any lodge in the region and is the first-choice base for the serious gorilla trekking visitor.

Bisate Lodge sits within a degraded former agricultural area on the park boundary, and since opening in 2017 Wilderness has replanted over 120,000 indigenous trees on the lodge's grounds — actively restoring montane forest habitat for wildlife, improving water catchment, and creating habitat corridors between remaining forest patches. Guests can participate in tree planting as part of their stay. The reforestation programme is one of the most visible and compelling conservation initiatives at any African lodge.

Volcanoes National Park is home to twelve habituated gorilla families, each visited by a maximum of eight trekkers per day. Trekking permit allocation is managed by the Rwanda Development Board and is limited to protect gorilla health and reduce habituation stress. Wilderness pre-arranges permits for Bisate guests; in peak season (June to September, December to February), permit availability can be limited and booking many months in advance is strongly recommended.

Bisate offers a surprisingly diverse activity menu beyond gorilla trekking. The golden monkey trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park is among Africa's most underrated wildlife encounters — habituated groups of these endemic Albertine Rift primates are exuberant, social, and fascinating to observe. Bisate's immediate landscape offers exceptional forest birding (Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, Shelley's crimsonwing), cultural visits to local communities, and guided forest walks on the lodge's own reforested grounds.

Wilderness Bisate is a luxury safari lodge near Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park — Africa's most significant habitat for endangered mountain gorillas. The lodge comprises six architecturally distinctive forest villas built in the style of traditional Rwandan royal architecture, set within a volcanic bowl/amphitheatre surrounded by indigenous rainforest. For travellers whose primary goal is mountain gorilla trekking, Bisate is the reference property — closest to the park gates, most awarded in Rwanda, and fully inclusive in its rate structure. The 2026 per-person per-night rate starts at USD2,569 and includes all meals, local drinks, activities, guides, and government taxes. Bisate Lodge is a luxury lodge with six permanent forest villas — a full-service property with restaurant, spa, wine cellar, and all-inclusive dining. Bisate Reserve is a newer offering within the same concession, designed for guests seeking deeper immersion and greater exclusivity; it operates as a fully private-use property. Both provide access to gorilla trekking and the Bisate concession's conservation activities, but differ significantly in scale, design, and experience. Bisate Lodge is situated on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda, approximately 15 km from the town of Musanze and 110 km (roughly 75 minutes by road) from Kigali International Airport. The lodge sits within its own private concession adjacent to the national park boundary.

Three things set Bisate apart: its physical proximity to habituated mountain gorilla groups, its reforestation programme (one of the most ambitious in East Africa, replanting indigenous forest across former agricultural land), and its architectural and cultural design grounded in Rwandan heritage. Since opening in 2017, it has won 34 international awards and has become a benchmark for conservation-led luxury tourism on the continent.

Bisate Lodge has six forest villas. The small capacity ensures an intimate experience and a high staff-to-guest ratio. A maximum of 12 guests are in lodge at any one time.

Currently gorilla trekking permits cost USD1 500. 

As the name suggests, rainforests can be cool and wet so we suggest you pack warm, protective clothing and comfortable hiking boots. Also, a hat and lightweight parka/rain jacket.   

Gorillas can be tracked year-round. The dry seasons — June to September and December to February — tend to offer firmer underfoot conditions and lower rainfall, making trekking slightly more comfortable. The green seasons (March to May, October to November) bring lush, photogenic landscapes, fewer visitors, and more favourable rates. There is no objectively wrong time to visit; the question is which trade-off suits your travel style. Rainforest climate is varied and rain can interrupt you for a few minutes during your trek and then carry on.

Yes. Gorilla trekking is possible and frequently excellent in the green season. The forest is at its most vibrant, bird activity peaks, and golden monkeys are highly active in the bamboo zones. The underfoot conditions are wetter and can be slippery — good hiking boots and gaiters are recommended. The trade-off in comfort is offset by lower rates and a quieter, more private experience. Gaiters are supplied by camp.

Mountain gorillas are the headline — guests trek to one of 12 habituated gorilla groups in Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkeys, endemic to the Virunga volcanoes, are frequently seen on dedicated trekking excursions. Bushbuck and jackals move through the wider area. The birdlife is exceptional, with over 200 species recorded including Rwenzori side-striped chameleon, regal sunbird, and a number of Albertine Rift endemics.

Park rangers track habituated gorilla groups daily, and the 12 groups in Volcanoes National Park have a very high sighting success rate — historically above 95%. While sightings can never be absolutely guaranteed in wild conditions, guests at Bisate very rarely leave without an encounter. Wilderness guides and Rwandan park rangers work together to maximise the quality of each experience. We can go deeper into this if you want, only 4 groups trekked each day to not overcrowd the nature and gorillas themselves.

Intermediate to high, Treks typically last between two and five hours, depending on where the gorilla group has moved to. The terrain is hilly, sometimes steep, and can be muddy regardless of season. Guests should be reasonably fit and comfortable walking over uneven ground. Porter assistance is available and strongly recommended — it supports local employment and meaningfully reduces fatigue.

Golden monkey trekking is an excellent alternative or addition, particularly for guests doing multiple nights. Other activities include guided birding walks on the nature trails surrounding the lodge, a Mount Bisoke summit hike (four to six hours, rewarded with crater lake views), a visit to the Dian Fossey gravesite, guided village walks to neighbouring communities, and the lodge's tree-planting programme. The Sanctuary spa offers treatments after physical days. Self lead hikes with markings along the route to guide you. 

Bisate manages an ongoing programme to restore indigenous Afromontane forest across land adjacent to Volcanoes National Park. This directly expands the gorilla habitat corridor. Guests plant a native tree during their stay as part of the experience. The lodge's tree nursery is open for guided visits at any time.

Each of Bisate's six forest villas is a freestanding circular structure, elevated above the forest floor and built to reference traditional Rwandan royal architecture. Interiors feature king-sized beds, open fireplaces lit each evening, en-suite bathrooms, and private decks overlooking the volcanoes. Higher-numbered villas sit at greater elevation and offer progressively wider views — the climb is worth it. Each villa includes a "gym in a basket" set of equipment and in-villa massage option.

Yes. WiFi is available throughout the lodge, including in the villas. Signal strength is consistent enough for video calls and business use.

Yes. The Sanctuary at Bisate offers a curated menu of wellness treatments drawing on Rwanda's natural heritage — botanical ingredients, locally sourced materials, and therapies designed around the physical demands of trekking days. A complimentary 20-minute neck and shoulder massage is included in the nightly rate.

Fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL). A road transfer of approximately three hours connects the airport to Bisate, passing through Musanze. Wilderness arranges all transfers as part of your journey. Unlike most Wilderness properties, there is no light aircraft connection — road transfer is the standard arrival method. Rwanda's park regulations require gorilla trekkers to be at least 15 years old. Children under 15 are welcome at Bisate Lodge itself and can participate in golden monkey trekking, birding, village walks, and other lodge activities. Children aged 6 and up are welcome at the lodge but under 15 guests will need to stay in camp while the rest of the party goes into the National Park to take part of the gorilla trekking. Staff in camp can accommodate youngsters with a number of available activities.

Rwanda is widely regarded as one of Africa's safest destinations and consistently ranks highly for political stability, cleanliness, and infrastructure. Volcanoes National Park is protected and well-managed. Bisate itself is unfenced, reflecting the surrounding natural environment, and all wildlife interactions are guided. Wilderness guides are trained in safety protocols and are present throughout all excursions.

2026 rates start at USD2,569 per person per night (March to April), rising to USD2,869 in May and USD3,795 in June. Rates for July onwards are available on request. These are fully inclusive of accommodation, all meals, local drinks (reserve wines and champagne excluded), laundry, lodge activities, and government taxes. Rates do not include trekking permit.

The fully inclusive rate covers: accommodation in a forest villa, all meals, a full selection of local drinks, laundry, guided and self-guided birding and nature walks, nursery visits and tree planting, guided village walks, a complimentary 20-minute massage, gym equipment access, biodiversity briefings, and documentary screenings.

Gorilla trekking permits (USD1,500 per person per trek), international and regional flights, and gratuities are not included.
