Let us introduce you to Bisate Lodge

Nothing can prepare you for it. The moment you encounter a mountain gorilla in the wild. As you close in quietly to see a mother cradling her baby, just metres away from you in the legendary mist-shrouded Virunga Mountains, there’s a palpable sense of interconnectedness. From the land, to the wildlife, to the people

What is Bisate

The Bisate is a private area adjacent to Volcanoes National Park managed by Wilderness for conservation and reforestation. It is not a conventional reserve — its purpose is to expand gorilla and montane forest habitat. The concession is what makes Bisate more than a lodge: it is an active conservation intervention, funded in part by guest revenue.

Cuisine

Bisate’s vegetable garden is an ecosystem intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient. Our menu comprises seasonal ingredients for freshness, the majority of which are from our own garden. We also support the communities already growing crops, and source our red-skinned and wonderfully starchy potatoes, as well as our eggs, organic and free range, from our neighbours.

Bisate Lodge built into the volcanoes

Getting there

Bisate is a 75-minute drive from Kigali International Airport, via the town of Musanze. Most guests fly into Kigali and transfer by road. Wilderness Air does not currently operate into Volcanoes National Park - all transfers are by vehicle. Transfers are done using Wilderness Touring operating as Thousand Hills Rwanda, who also offers Kigali town and historical tours. Flights are often early morning or late at night, and we recommend guests spend one night in Kigali before being driven to Bisate Lodge. Helicopter transfers are also offered.

Best time to visit

Bisate is open year-round. The two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer the easiest trekking conditions underfoot, but gorillas can be tracked in all seasons. The green season, March to May and October to November, brings lush landscapes and lower rates.

Typical stay

Three to four nights is recommended. This allows for two gorilla treks, advisable given permit cost and variability, one golden monkey trek, and time for birding, village walks, and the reforestation experience.

Who it's best for

Serious wildlife travellers with a specific interest in primates. Solo travellers, couples, and small groups do well here. It is not suited to guests unable to walk 2-5 hours over hilly terrain. Children under 15 are not permitted on gorilla treks under Rwandan park regulations.

Wilderness does it again

"Bisate is like a little piece of heaven. The staff treated us like kings and queens. The design of the lodge is impressive. We loved our villa and having the fireplace lit for us was so romantic and appreciated on the chilly evenings. We even had private massages in our villa that were so appreciated after our gorilla trekking. The food that the chef prepared was 5 stars. They even prepared a very special private dinner for us in the wine cellar for our last night. Thank you Bisate staff for a wonderful stay that we will never forget. We will definitely come back."

Can't say enough great things

"This place is so amazing that I don't know even know where to begin. First, I am going to start with the lodge's incredible staff because without their hospitality, our stay would not have been as lovely as it was. Each and every person who works at Bisate (and we had contact with everyone) is absolutely fabulous. They made us feel like family. They were warm, friendly, genuine and so kind. They just love what they do. The lodge itself is truly authentic. Warm and charming. There are only six villas and they are huge and beautifully appointed. Keep in mind that the higher your room number the higher your climb but the views of the volcanoes are so beautiful that it is worth it. The food is great and I took lots of recipes home. We also each planted a tree on the property to help towards the reforestation and restoration of the gorilla's natural habitat. We stayed at Bisate for four nights. We did two gorilla treks and in between we saw the Golden Monkeys, which I highly recommend. The other people staying at Bisate were awesome. Very friendly and down to earth. When we travel we stay at the best places and don't always feel relaxed and satisfied. Bisate did not disappoint."

Magical stay

"We had an absolutely dreamy stay. Every staff member was kind, friendly and welcoming. The rooms are unique and cozy. The food was amazing. We don’t eat meat and they knew in advance and catered a delicious menu for us each day. The nightly drinks with the other guests were very fun. It was nice to compare Gorilla experiences. The cozy fireplace lit everyday and night made the room cozy and warm. After our two trekking days our clothes and boats were covered in mud… the staff cleaned and washed everything to perfection. I have no idea how they got our boats so clean. We planted trees and learned all about the volcanoes national park expansion plans. Thank you to the entire staff for making our gorilla trek in Rwanda so magical."
