Let us introduce you to Bisate Lodge
What is Bisate
The Bisate is a private area adjacent to Volcanoes National Park managed by Wilderness for conservation and reforestation. It is not a conventional reserve — its purpose is to expand gorilla and montane forest habitat. The concession is what makes Bisate more than a lodge: it is an active conservation intervention, funded in part by guest revenue.

Experience overview

Wildlife & safari experience
Ontop of gorilla trekking. Guests are assigned to one of 12 habituated gorilla groups in Volcanoes National Park, with each trek yielding a 60-minute sighting at close range. Golden monkey trekking — a gentler, equally extraordinary alternative — is available on the same trails. The surrounding Albertine Rift montane forest supports over 200 bird species, including several endemics.

Landscape & setting
The lodge sits inside a natural volcanic bowl, enclosed by ancient rainforest and overlooked by a chain of dormant volcanoes. The landscape is unlike anywhere else in Africa — mist-draped, intensely green, and charged with a sense of ecological significance. Rwanda's nickname, The Land of a Thousand Hills, does not do the Virungas justice.

Camp style & design
Bisate's six forest villas are built to evoke giant birds' nests — circular, elevated, and crafted from natural materials. Each references traditional Rwandan royal architecture (ihumure). Interiors are warm and layered, with fireplaces, king-sized beds, and en-suite bathrooms. A wine cellar, library, spa (The Sanctuary), and tree nursery complete the communal spaces.

Level of luxury
Bisate sits at the highest tier of Wilderness properties. Rates are fully inclusive, and the staff-to-guest ratio reflects a six-villa property. The Kwanda day lounge — Rwanda's first of its kind — allows late check-outs and pre-departure comfort after a final trek.
