Why Tanzania for a private safari?

Tanzania is one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations – and also one of its most popular. With Wilderness Usawa Serengeti you can enjoy the essence of a private safari in the region at our luxury mobile camp positioned seasonally for optimal access to the Great Migration, while still remaining far from the crowds. Usawa Serengeti offers an intimate opportunity to experience one of the continent’s most sought-after wildlife spectacles.

While shared game drives and activities are usually part of the experience, the small size of the camp (with just six suites) ensures a highly personalised atmosphere, and a private vehicle with a dedicated guide can be arranged on request.

You may also choose to pair your safari in the Serengeti with other destinations in Tanzania, a private tour of Arusha or an extended journey into Rwanda or Kenya.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year for a private safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania and the Serengeti is a year-round safari destination. June to October is traditionally considered the most popular time for a safari as this is the time of the famous Great Migration Mara River crossings, however this is also peak season, so travelling at this time offers a less exclusive experience. Calving season between January and March offers dramatic conditions for photography with plenty of newborn calves and predators following in their wake, and there are typically fewer visitors, enhancing the sense of exclusivity.

Which Wilderness camps in Tanzania are best for a private safari?

Wilderness owns one camp in Tanzania, Wilderness Usawa Serengeti. However, unlike larger permanent lodges, Usawa consists of two luxurious mobile camps with just six tents each, which are shifted seasonally to follow the herds. This set up creates an exclusive atmosphere and a far more personalised safari experience than many other properties in the Serengeti. The camps can also be booked for sole use, making them ideal for families, groups of friends or special celebrations.

How remote are the camps? Is there connectivity?

Despite the more remote, unfenced settings of Wilderness Usawa Serengeti’s camps, you can still enjoy modern comforts, including Wi-Fi connectivity in guest areas, allowing you to stay in touch when needed, while still embracing the wild experience.

Are there specific activities for families on a private Tanzania safari?

At Wilderness Usawa Serengeti, children must be six years or older to stay at the camp, and children under 16 are required to share a room with an adult. Family units comprised of two adjoining tents are available on request. Families bringing children under the age of six must book the camp for sole use. Additionally, there is a strict minimum age limit of 12 years old for guided walking safaris.

In addition to game drives and walking safaris, families can also enjoy guided stargazing under some of East Africa's clearest night skies, as well as an exhilarating hot-air balloon safari (at additional cost and subject to age restrictions).
