Cape Town, Hwange, Mana Pools
I like this trip because it showcases very different sides of Southern Africa from the city to safari. Cape Town offers culture, scenery, and food without feeling rushed, while Hwange delivers classic safari moments with big herds and open spaces. Mana Pools then shifts the pace again, with a more intimate safari experience along the river. It’s the best of all worlds rolled into one.

Cape Grace sits on its own private quay within Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, occupying one of the city's most enviable positions: close to everything, yet with a sense of calm remove that larger waterfront hotels rarely manage. Rooms range from harbour-facing categories with French doors opening onto step-out balconies, to rooftop rooms that sit above the city with a quiet sense of elevation. The mountain view options frame Table Mountain and the yacht marina in equal measure. Families are well catered for, with a dedicated Signature Safari Family Room complete with loft beds and a playful aesthetic that sits comfortably alongside Cape Grace's broader refinement. The Fairmont Spa draws on coastal botanical scents for its treatments, and a heated outdoor pool and well-equipped gym round out the facilities. At the Heirloom Restaurant, South African culinary heritage gets a considered, contemporary treatment. Beyond the hotel, the Waterfront puts Table Mountain cableway, the city's wine bars, and some of the Western Cape's finest golf courses within easy reach. Insider's Tip: The hotel's RE:CYCLE bicycles, crafted from recycled Nespresso capsules, are a genuinely good way to explore Cape Town beyond the Waterfront at your own pace.

Spend the day touring Cape Town and iconic Table Mountain. Your tour is with a private guide and at your own pace picking out the attractions which interest you. Typically highlights include, the Houses of Parliament, the Castle (built between 1666 and 1679, this is South Africa's oldest building), the lively Green Market Square with its daily market, the Company Gardens and of course Table Mountain which will give you spectacular views over the city and Peninsula (depending on the weather). On the descent, you can stop at the Bo Kaap, traditionally home to the Cape Malay community, with its cobbled streets and brightly coloured houses. Note that this tour can be done in the morning or the afternoon - the choice is yours

A charming, intimate camp in the south-east of Hwange, Wilderness Little Makalolo features prominently on the mental maps of local wildlife, all drawn to its reliable waterhole. A log-pile hide affords unique, thrilling close-up views of elephants, and habitat diversity ensures year-round wildlife. Activities focus on game drives and morning nature walks. The many waterholes produce amazing sightings, or guests can relax in camp and wait for wildlife to come to them. The six spacious en-suite tents (including a family tent) are only surpassed in the experience stakes by the opportunity to sleep out at the Madison Pan star bed. Insider's Tip: Visit the log-pile hide between game drives to enjoy close up viewing of wildlife at the productive waterhole. Situated in a large private concession in the heart of the Zambezi Valley’s Mana Pools National Park, Wilderness Ruckomechi looks out from the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. It is a remote, picturesque place with spectacular views of the broad flowing river, the adjacent woodland and the mountains of the Rift Valley escarpment. Ten spacious and beautifully decorated en-suite tents, including two family rooms, lie beneath the ana trees, best-beloved of local elephants for their nutritious seeds. The camp's central living space includes an inviting fire pit for pleasant evenings beneath the African night skies. Other unique features include a pool which overlooks a broad sweep of the river, an outdoor “bath with a view” in a secluded, scenic spot, and a romantic Star Bed by a busy waterhole. Open 4x4 vehicles, motorised pontoon boats, canoes and good old safari boots facilitate the wildlife viewing. Wilderness Ruckomechi is open throughout the dry (winter) season. Insider's Tip: A boat cruise along the mighty Zambezi is a wonderful way to see wildlife and waterbirds from a different perspective. For the more adventurous – there’s the option of canoeing along this famous river!
