This Botswana adventure is one of my favourites for travellers looking for an action packed game viewing experience! It promises the drama of predator action in areas known for their high density of lion, leopard and wild dogs These areas are also some of the best for night game drives, allowing you to spot lesser known nocturnal species. It’s a safari I’m confident will stay with you long after you’ve left Botswana.

Day 1
Maun Airport
Maun Airport to Wilderness Chitabe
Flight • 00:40h
On arrival at Maun Airport and after clearing customs and immigration, you will be met and assisted by a Wilderness representative to your light aircraft for your onward transfer to Wilderness Chitabe.

Wilderness Chitabe’s location places it at the heart of a complex and beautiful mosaic of habitats, and this diversity results in Wilderness Chitabe being one of the most storied of all Botswana’s areas. Experienced, passionate guides are inspired by the intricate and dynamic landscapes to deliver wildlife experiences few other locations can match. Eight elevated, meru-style guest tents provide the perfect human habitat, while a stroll along the elevated walkways connecting them to the main area is a safari experience in itself. Day and night drives, and guided walks, showcase the varied wildlife and landscapes of the Okavango. Insider’s Tip: Learn more about the African wild dog packs of the area; if you’re lucky you’ll see some of these endangered carnivores.

In the Chitabe concession morning and afternoon game drives traverse a mosaic of grasslands, acacia woodland, and seasonal floodplains, with the area particularly renowned for its high predator densities. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs are frequently encountered here, alongside large herds of elephant, buffalo, and plains game. As daylight fades, night drives bring the chance to spot more secretive species. You may also choose to swap your game drive for a guided walk which adds a slower rhythm to your safari, uncovering details often overlooked from a vehicle, while private bush lunches on the Gomoti floodplains offer a unique experience or a chance to celebrate a special occassion. For keen photographers, specialist guiding ensures you have the time, positioning, and knowledge to capture the perfect shot. And for a perspective few ever experience, optional-extra scenic helicopter flights reveal the scale and beauty of the Delta from above.

In our search for the most raw, remote, and untamed places on the planet, we discovered somewhere so wild, so abundant with life, it left us breathless, and a little bit emotional. Be one of the first to venture to this camp in a completely untouched area, where Wilderness is pioneering a safari experience unlike any you’ve seen before. The name Mokete means celebration or feast. It’s a place to feast on the unexplored and celebrate the untamed. Here the action never ends. This is a place to be awed by the majesty of Africa with an unrivalled diversity of wildlife. To place you in the heart of the drama, we’ve forgone walls and added cantilevered canvas roofs that slide away, revealing never-ending stars. Accommodating just 18 guests in nine tents, pioneering Mokete provides one of the most promising possibilities of intimate encounters all year. Whether sharing a drink with elephants in the middle of the day, or hearing hyena calls in the dead of night, it’s a feast for the senses. Insider's Tip: Be sure to spend some time at the sunken hide, eye-level with the colossal feet of breeding herds of elephants.

Exploring the Mababe Depression offers a chance to safari in one of the world's last untouched wild areas. Timing of game drives is dictated by the wildlife with herds of zebra, elephant and buffalo often seen on the plains, as well predators following in their wake, often hunting in broad daylight. You might also choose to join a guided nature walk to discover the smaller wonders often missed from a vehicle, or settle into the sunken hide for an afternoon seeing what wildlife might arrive. For a cultural connection, a visit to Mababe Village offers the chance to meet local people, hear stories from elders, learn traditional tracking and basket-weaving, or even share in a friendly soccer match. To truly appreciate the scale of the area you could also take to the skies on a scenic helicopter flight.

Wilderness King's Pool consistently delivers the best dry season game viewing in far northern Botswana. Situated on the border with Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, Wilderness King's Pool is in an area vital to the seasonal movements of elephant herds and to the survival of rare roan and sable antelope. Looking down over the Linyanti River and up from the safety of sunken hides gives guests unexpected angles from which to witness great wildlife moments. Seven well-appointed twins and one family room, all made of canvas, wood and, thatch, soak up the views of the lagoon. The main area, deck, and bar offer uninterrupted views with closer proximity to the water, while parts of the roof extend down to ensure privacy. Insider’s Tip: Special highlights include sundowners on the Queen Silvia barge and time out at the unique underground hide!
