This itinerary is all about understanding how water shapes life in Botswana. Each stop offers a different relationship with water, from the rivers of Linyanti, to island channels at Little Vumbura, to the open marshland around Mokete. In turn, the wildlife behaviour and landscapes change constantly. It’s a great option for travellers who want depth of experience and who enjoy seeing how subtle shifts in terrain create completely different safaris.

In our search for the most raw, remote, and untamed places on the planet, we discovered somewhere so wild, so abundant with life, it left us breathless, and a little bit emotional. Be one of the first to venture to this camp in a completely untouched area, where Wilderness is pioneering a safari experience unlike any you’ve seen before. The name Mokete means celebration or feast. It’s a place to feast on the unexplored and celebrate the untamed. Here the action never ends. This is a place to be awed by the majesty of Africa with an unrivalled diversity of wildlife. To place you in the heart of the drama, we’ve forgone walls and added cantilevered canvas roofs that slide away, revealing never-ending stars. Accommodating just 18 guests in nine tents, pioneering Mokete provides one of the most promising possibilities of intimate encounters all year. Whether sharing a drink with elephants in the middle of the day, or hearing hyena calls in the dead of night, it’s a feast for the senses. Insider's Tip: Be sure to spend some time at the sunken hide, eye-level with the colossal feet of breeding herds of elephants.

Exploring the Mababe Depression offers a chance to safari in one of the world's last untouched wild areas. Timing of game drives is dictated by the wildlife with herds of zebra, elephant and buffalo often seen on the plains, as well predators following in their wake, often hunting in broad daylight. You might also choose to join a guided nature walk to discover the smaller wonders often missed from a vehicle, or settle into the sunken hide for an afternoon seeing what wildlife might arrive. For a cultural connection, a visit to Mababe Village offers the chance to meet local people, hear stories from elders, learn traditional tracking and basket-weaving, or even share in a friendly soccer match. To truly appreciate the scale of the area you could also take to the skies on a scenic helicopter flight.

Wilderness King's Pool consistently delivers the best dry season game viewing in far northern Botswana. Situated on the border with Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, Wilderness King's Pool is in an area vital to the seasonal movements of elephant herds and to the survival of rare roan and sable antelope. Looking down over the Linyanti River and up from the safety of sunken hides gives guests unexpected angles from which to witness great wildlife moments. Seven well-appointed twins and one family room, all made of canvas, wood and, thatch, soak up the views of the lagoon. The main area, deck, and bar offer uninterrupted views with closer proximity to the water, while parts of the roof extend down to ensure privacy.
