Game drives at Desert Rhino Camp take you across the stark, otherworldly landscapes of Namibia’s Palmwag Concession. This is one of the last strongholds of the desert-adapted black rhino, and tracking these critically endangered animals in partnership with the Save the Rhino Trust is a rare privilege. Alongside rhino, drives can reveal desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, and even the occassional lion or brown hyena. Because the concession is private, you can also venture out after dark, when night drives uncover a fascinating nocturnal world and the opportunity to potentially spot a porcupine, bat-eared fox, or a number of owls. With expert guides interpreting every track and sign, game drives here offer a unique exploration of one of Africa's most dramatic and remote wild spaces.
Day 5
Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp to Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast
Flight • 00:25h
You will be taken by light aircraft from Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp to Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast.

The name “Skeleton Coast” conjures up romantic images of desolate beauty, and the proudly remote Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in the Kaokoveld does not disappoint. The dry bed of the Hoanib River supports a thin green ribbon of vegetation and the wild beaches of the Atlantic coast are within reach, with their noisy seal colonies and eerily quiet shipwreck remnants. Eight large en-suite tents (including one family unit) and the main area provide shady viewpoints, while nature drives into the surrounding area reveal a wealth of desert-adapted wildlife. Desert-adapted lion and brown hyena may also be glimpsed in this vast but far from lifeless landscape. Insider's Tip: On a stay of three nights or more, a coastal excursion to The Skeleton Coast is included. Usually involving a drive down to the coast and a flight back to camp, to see such a diverse area both on the ground and in the air.

Days begin with game drives across stark valleys and dry riverbeds, where desert-adapted lion and elephant can occassionally be seen as well as giraffe, oryx, springbok, and Hartmann’s mountain zebra. The camp’s private concession also allows for night drives, when the desert’s elusive nocturnal creatures sometimes emerge including porcupines, aardwolves, and bat-eared foxes. Guided walks bring you closer to the fine details of the desert including tracks written in the sand, ingenious plants, and the smaller creatures that miraculously survive here. For those staying three nights or more, a highlight is the full-day excursion to the wild Skeleton Coast, where towering dunes, windswept beaches, and the rusting remains of shipwrecks tell the story of nature’s raw power.
