Sossusvlei, Desert Rhino, Kunene
What I love about this itinerary is how it shows Namibia in all its extremes. You can appreciate the beauty and scale from above in a hot air balloon, see rare wildlife such as desert-adapted rhinos, and experience local culture with a visit to a nomadic Himba village. Each place feels completely different, but each is totally remote and wild.

Wilderness Kulala Desert Lodge’s location at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei dunes allows for stunning views in every direction, while its private entrance to the Namib Naukluft National Park makes it the closest location to Sossusvlei. The camp is ideal for self-drives and groups. Twenty-one thatched and canvas tents (including two family units), each built on raised wooden platforms make for airy, comfortable accommodation, with a rooftop area for sleep-outs under the stars. Afternoons around the pool provide relief from the heat, while the wraparound veranda at the main area overlooks a waterhole, and private tours of the dunes provide the ultimate Sossusvlei experience. Insider's Tip: Try your hand at desert photography – whether capturing the red colour of the dunes in the early morning light or the otherworldly tree skeletons standing starkly across the floor of Dead Vlei.

After returning to camp for a leisurely brunch, your day can continue with guided nature drives, keeping an eye out for springbok, oryx, and ostrich, or on foot with interpretive walks that reveal the desert’s smaller wonders. For those seeking adventure, quad biking and fat biking provide an exhilarating way to explore the world's oldest desert. Evenings bring a slower rhythm, with sundowners and stargazing in some of the clearest night skies on Earth.

Game drives at Desert Rhino Camp take you across the stark, otherworldly landscapes of Namibia’s Palmwag Concession. This is one of the last strongholds of the desert-adapted black rhino, and tracking these critically endangered animals in partnership with the Save the Rhino Trust is a rare privilege. Alongside rhino, drives can reveal desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, and even the occassional lion or brown hyena. Because the concession is private, you can also venture out after dark, when night drives uncover a fascinating nocturnal world and the opportunity to potentially spot a porcupine, bat-eared fox, or a number of owls. With expert guides interpreting every track and sign, game drives here offer a unique exploration of one of Africa's most dramatic and remote wild spaces.

Flight • 02:30h
You will be taken by light aircraft from Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp to Wilderness Serra Cafema.

Set amongst shady trees on the banks of the Kunene River, Wilderness Serra Cafema is one of the most remote camps in southern Africa, its Portuguese name originating from the mountains that dominate the northern skyline. Guests fall asleep to the sound of rushing water, while by day they explore one of the driest deserts in the world. Activities here are varied, including boating (water levels permitting), walking, viewing breathtaking landscapes, as well as carefully guided quad-bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes. In this isolated region, the Himba people continue their nomadic, traditional way of life and when in the area, guests have the opportunity to meet them and learn about their lifestyle and traditions. Insider's Tip: Most authentic Himba cultural experience in all of Namibia!
