Exploring the Mababe Depression offers a chance to safari in one of the world's last untouched wild areas. Timing of game drives are dictated by the wildlife here with herds of zebra, elephant and buffalo often seen on the plains, as well predators following in their wake, often hunting in broad daylight.

You might also choose to join a guided nature walk to discover the smaller wonders often missed from a vehicle, or settle into the sunken hide for an afternoon seeing what wildlife might arrive. For a cultural connection, a visit to Mababe Village offers the chance to meet local people, hear stories from elders, learn traditional tracking and basket-weaving, or even share in a friendly soccer match. The name Qorokwe means 'the place where the buffalo broke through the bush into the water' and is evocative of the high-density game area in which the camp is situated. The diverse habitats of the south-eastern Okavango support a wealth of wildlife, earning the area’s well-deserved reputation as a top Botswana safari destination.

Wilderness Qorokwe has nine tented suites, one of which is a spacious family unit with a private plunge pool. At Wilderness camps in the Okavango Delta, twice-daily game drives form the heart of the safari experience. Early mornings see you heading out in open 4x4 vehicles, when the light is golden and predators are often still on the move. Guides and trackers use their expertise to follow the clues of the bush including fresh tracks in the sand and distant alarm calls to lead you to wildlife sightings.

After a stop for coffee and snacks in a scenic spot, you return to camp for a relaxed breakfast or brunch. Later, as the heat eases, afternoon drives bring the chance to see more but beyond the vehicle, there are also various other ways to discover the Delta.

Depending on water levels, you might glide silently along reed-lined channels by mokoro, head out by boat in search of hippo and waterbirds, or even cast a line for catch-and-release fishing.

Wilderness Mombo, on Mombo Island just off the northern tip of Chief’s Island, is built under large shady trees and overlooks a wonderful floodplain teeming with wildlife.

Accommodation comprises eight spacious suites raised off the ground, all built to maximise the vistas over the plains. The Silo is a magical space towering above the V&A Waterfront. The Silo is built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). The hotel has 28 rooms, including a spectacular penthouse. Each room is individually designed and decorated by the stylish Liz Biden. Lace up your hiking books and follow the trail as it loops from Kloof Nek up to the top of Lion’s Head. This is an easy to moderate hike that rewards you with spectacular views out over Cape Town’s City Bowl and the Atlantic. On a clear day you can even see Robben Island in the distance.

The popular hike is best tackled either first thing in the morning, or in the early evening. It takes approximately an hour to reach the summit (669m or 2,195 feet), but the hike can be broken up into sections to allow you to have time to stop and take in the changing views as you loop around the mountain.

You may choose to plan for a picnic once you reach the top, or if you find yourself in the Mother City during a full moon, join the local hikers at the summit for a spectacular moon rise.

The hike includes two sets of short ladders bolted to the rock face.

This rippling sand sea of huge dunes has been shaped by the winds and the underground Tsauchab River. Solitary dead acacia trees plot the old routes of the river, some even from 500 years ago, and when the rains do arrive (January to April) the pans really come alive with yellow devil thorn flowers and the dunes bloom green in places.

Wilderness Savuti provides front-row seats to amazing wildlife viewing perched high on the banks of the channel. Much more rugged than Luangwa or the Zambezi and, regardless of its prominent setting, Kafue is not crowded with tourists. Instead, this wildlife prolific Park remains largely untouched with a whopping range of habitats and thus, animals too.

From open plains to wooded areas to the broad Kafue River, this flora and fauna paradise boasts a truly impressive array of sightings, including packs of the elusive wild dog, pods of hippo and numerous big cats and ungulate.

Such a variety of habitats also leads to more unusual game viewing. Curious creatures such as the honey badger, otter, mongoose and bush baby can all be spotted here. Endless hours can also be spent birdwatching with over 500 bird species calling this park home.

Nestled discreetly beneath a grove of false mopane trees, Wilderness Davison's is located in the private Linkwasha Concession - one of the most prolific wildlife areas in Hwange National Park. Hidden within a treeline, this African safari camp overlooks an open plain and a waterhole that attracts large numbers of animals, especially thirsty herds of elephant and buffalo in the dry season.

Spend your days here in Hwange witnessing a vast array of exciting animals in Zimbabwe’s largest national park. Accounting for an area of 14,651km sq, it was formerly occupied by the San people and the Nhanzwa. It wasn’t until 1928 that the park became recognized as a wildlife conservation area and a popular destination for those seeking out incredible safari and wildlife experiences.

It is home to over 100 mammals and 400 different bird species, the park protects a wide range of different endangered species, elephants in excess of 20,000, and what is thought to be one of the largest populations of African wild dog left in the world. It is also common to see large prides of lion and buffalo and you have a good chance of seeing leopard, rhino, cheetah and mischievous spotted hyena.

On the same island as its sister camp (Wilderness Chitabe), Wilderness Chitabe Lediba is a more intimate destination and is ideally suited to small groups and families. The surrounding mix of savannah, woodlands and palm-dotted floodplains, that characterise this corner of the Delta, support a diversity of species year round. Game drives take in an abundant array of herbivores: giraffes, buffalos, red lechwe, tsessebe, impala and elephants, which in turn attracts the larger predators: lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, and African wild dogs.

Of the five meru-style guest tents, each decorated in a distinctive and appealing style, two are specifically designed for families having adjoining bedrooms and a shared en-suite bathroom. The dining area, lounge and pool have a glorious vantage over the small lediba (a lagoon within a channel) after which the camp is named and lend themselves to recounting exciting safari tales.

Insider's Tip: Scan the bush-veld during your evening drive for nocturnal mammals such as civets, genets, bushbabies, owls and leopards.

Even though it’s largely flat and sandy, this concession which borders Moremi Game Reserve also has grassy floodplains, acacia woodlands and lagoons. Thanks to high concentrations of impala who spend their time between the acacia woodlands and floodplains, Chitabe is a great place to spot the elusive leopard and well as lions. You’ll also spot small numbers of buffalo and elephant, with larger breeding herds passing through at the beginning of the dry season.

Chitabe Concession is also known for its wild dog population, thanks partly to the efforts of Dave and Helen Hamman, owners of Chitabe and Chitabe Lediba.

The area is great for sunset and night drives as well as walking safaris. The birdlife here is excellent and varies through the year, depending on water levels and season. Look out for African hawk-eagle, ground hornbill, scarlet-chested sunbird, red-billed hornbill, gabar goshawk and red-billed francolin.

The number of guests here is limited, with just 26 people across two camps, so game drives offer you privacy and exclusivity.
