Untamed wild places

African safaris

For over 40 years, we have pioneered the art of the luxury African safari, curating deeply personal journeys that protect the continent’s most iconic wild places.

The African safari

Africa's original luxury safari company

From Wilderness’ birthplace in diverse Botswana, home of the phenomenal Okavango Delta, to the dense forests and great apes of Rwanda, or the ancient, intriguing desert landscapes of Namibia, let’s explore Africa’s wild spaces, together.

The Wilderness footprint spans eight countries across 2.2 million hectares (5.4 million acres) in Africa. It's always been our aim to tread lightly, acting with the purpose of conserving each of these magnificent wild areas and the life found there. From ancient cultures to historic rock art sites, vibrant communities, and iconic wildlife, Africa safeguards some of the planet’s most important cultural and ecological legacies.

What is a luxury African safari?

For us, luxury on safari is all about providing access to places most people will never reach, accompanied by guides who have spent their lives speaking the language of the wild. Our camps operate in private concessions or remote wilderness areas, accommodate between six and 18 guests, and offer game drives in custom vehicles limited to six guests, which means a more intimate and personal safari experience for you. Meals are prepared by dedicated chefs from fresh produce grown on site or purchased from surrounding communities where possible – the same ones you can visit on village excursions. Other activities include canoeing, hot air ballooning, helicopter flights, and mokoro and boat safaris. Combine all this with our ability to create a full-service itinerary complete with light-aircraft transfers, city hotel stays and beach getaways and you can enjoy a seamless trip to Africa, where your every need is taken care of.

Morning activity

Whether tracking rhino, trekking for gorilla or going on a game drive, your days on a safari holiday start early, waking up before dawn for your morning activity.

Brunch

After a few hours on a game drive or walking safari, you’ll return to camp or a surprise location for a hearty brunch, followed by siesta time, and the opportunity to relax. That is unless you're trekking through the Rwanda rainforest, tracking rhinos in the Namibia desert or embarking on an extended game drive in Mababe where time is dictated by the wildlife you find.

How much does an African safari cost?

A Wilderness safari typically ranges from USD 800 to USD 4,000+ per person per night, fully inclusive. That figure covers accommodation, all meals and most drinks at camp, twice-daily game activities with your guide, and all park and conservation fees.

The variation in price reflects three things: the remoteness of the camp, the season, and whether you travel in a shared or private vehicle. Fly-in camps in private concessions – where no other operator brings guests – command a premium because that exclusivity is real and the wildlife sightings reflect it. Shoulder season travel in May, June, or November cuts nightly rates by 15-30% at most of our camps without meaningfully compromising game viewing.

Our Travel Designers regularly combine one flagship camp with a second property in the same ecosystem at a lower nightly rate, extending your time on the ground without extending your budget. The conversation we start with is not how much you want to spend – it is how much time you have and what you most want to see.

Bisate Reserve is in a class of its own. It is beyond excellent. If you can afford it, you must stay here. It is a piece of heaven on earth and, best of all, representative of a greater purpose: to expand the world's wilderness and protect the world's last wild spaces.
