A festive year-end at Magashi

filled with wildlife wonders

December 2025 marked a meaningful close to the year on the Magashi Concession. It was a month shaped by extraordinary wildlife encounters, joyful festive celebrations, strong teamwork, and important milestones for our Wilderness family. As the year ended, the concession was alive with unforgettable safari experiences for both guests and staff.

Exceptional wildlife sightings

December was an outstanding month for wildlife viewing. Many guests staying at Magashi and Magashi Peninsula encountered all Big Five species – lion, elephant, leopard, African buffalo and rhino – perfectly rounding out their exciting Akagera activities. Each game drive and boat safari brought notable moments – from the golden light over the savannah to watching the animals in their numbers, moving freely across the plains at their own pace.

A highlight this month was watching a lion successfully bring down an impala – a sought-after sighting on any safari. As the hunt unfolded, guests watched in awe as the lion used speed, strength, and strategy to secure its prey. The guide explained the hunting technique, the role of teamwork within the pride, and the importance of a successful kill for the survival of the pride. While seeing lions is always exciting, observing a full-circle predator-prey interaction gave guests great insight into the natural balance of the ecosystem. Undoubtedly an emotional moment, it was equal parts educational and unforgettable.

Leopard moments to remember

Leopard sightings were another standout feature of December. Known for their secretive nature and elusive behaviour, leopards are sometimes considered a bonus sighting in Akagera. December, however, proved the exception, with many guests enjoying close and exciting encounters.

One particularly memorable moment occurred during a game drive when a hungry leopard, surrounded by impalas, unexpectedly chased and caught a mouse. Although the prey was small, the scene offered guests a rare and fascinating insight into leopard behaviour. The moment sparked laughter, surprise, and appreciation for the unpredictability of wildlife.

Beyond the predators, sightings of rhinos, elephants, buffalo, and a wide variety of plains game were frequent throughout the concession, creating rich and rewarding safari experiences for all.

A joyful festive season on the Magashi Concession

The festive season brought a warm and celebratory spirit to Magashi. Guests chose our award-winning luxury safari camp in Akagera National Park as their home for the holidays, and the team delivered on all counts. From fun decorations and specially curated menus, to signature holiday cocktails and personalised service, every detail was carefully managed.

Guests enjoyed relaxed days, celebratory evenings, and meaningful moments shared with fellow travellers and staff. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, gratitude, and connection, making the festive period not only special, but truly memorable.

Celebrating team spirit – Magashi’s end-of-year staff party
One of the most meaningful highlights of December was the end-of-year staff celebration, which brought together team members from Magashi Camp and our newly opened Magashi Peninsula. With the Peninsula team focused on pre-opening preparations, and Magashi Camp busy with guests, opportunities to connect had been limited throughout the year.

The celebration created a valuable space for everyone to come together – to relax, celebrate achievements, share stories, and strengthen relationships. It was a joyful reminder of what it really means to be part of the Wilderness family: not just working together, but sharing values, laughter, respect, and a strong sense of belonging.

A major milestone for the Magashi Concession

December also marked a significant milestone as we closed the year with the launch of a brand-new lodge! The opening of Magashi Peninsula represents continued growth and confidence in Akagera National Park, and is very exciting news for the entire Wilderness family.

With the expansion came increased operations and a growing team. We were delighted to begin welcoming guests to this premium lodge – the only one of its kind in Akagera. Watching guests experience and appreciate Magashi Peninsula for the first time was a proud and rewarding moment for the entire team.

Welcoming the Wilderness Rwanda Sales team

We were pleased to host the Wilderness Rwanda Sales team from the Kigali office, who visited Magashi during December. Their visit included a detailed site inspection of Magashi Peninsula, covering the two suites and the Villa.

This first-hand experience allowed the Sales team to gain a deeper understanding of the lodge’s operations, guest experiences, and positioning. With this knowledge, they are better equipped to guide guests based on their preferences and expectations. The strong collaboration between the Sales and Operations teams continues to strengthen service quality, and ensures everyone remains aligned in delivering exceptional guest experiences.

December 2025 was honestly a bonus month – filled with celebration, growth, remarkable wildlife sightings, and shared memories, it brought together guests, staff, and the wider Wilderness family in a spirit of gratitude and achievement.

We extend our sincere thanks to our guests for choosing Magashi Concession to celebrate such special moments, and to our dedicated team for their passion, professionalism, and commitment. Together, you made the close of 2025 not only successful, but also absolutely unforgettable.
