Seasonal transition at Bisate

A beautiful sunset view from Wilderness Bisate in Rwanda

As May arrives, Bisate embraces its beautiful seasonal transition. The lush rainy season is gradually giving way to the dry season, signaling the start of the much-anticipated peak safari period. The landscape remains vibrant and green, while the clearer skies and pleasant weather create perfect conditions for wildlife viewing and outdoor adventures.

There is a wonderful sense of energy across the concession as our team anticipates the high season. Nature seems to be joining the excitement as well, with an abundance of wildlife making memorable appearances throughout the concession.

From exciting wildlife encounters to inspiring conservation efforts and community highlights, May was a month filled with highlights, and we are delighted to share them here.

Remarkable sightings in the Bisate Concession

The Bisate Concession continues to offer extraordinary wildlife experiences, with every day delivering new surprises from nature. From magnificent birdlife to frequent, thrilling buffalo sightings, the concession was vibrant and full of life in May.

Recently, our guide William observed a magnificent African wood owl resting in a Hagenia abyssinica tree – one of the indigenous species planted through our ongoing reforestation efforts. This rare sighting perfectly highlights the success of our conservation efforts within the concession.

Another memorable moment came when Fulgence spotted a calm buffalo near the guest arrival parking area. While buffalos are widely respected for their unpredictable nature, the individuals frequently seen around Bisate appear unusually relaxed and accustomed to the environment, offering guests exceptional viewing opportunities from a safe distance.

‘Bisate’ meaning and celebrating local talent

As a celebrated symbol of Rwandan hospitality, Bisate Lodge often inspires curiosity among guests, many of whom ask about the meaning behind the name ‘Bisate’. In Kinyarwanda, Bisate translates as ‘pieces’ or ‘fragments’. The name was inspired by the surrounding volcanic terrain, shaped by an ancient eroded volcanic cone that appears fragmented across the landscape.

The spirit of Bisate is also reflected in the remarkable individuals from the surrounding community who contribute to the guest experience. One such individual is Jado, a valued team member born and raised near the Bisate Concession.

Jado’s journey at the lodge has been truly inspiring. Beginning in Back-of-House Operations and growing into an outstanding Front-of-House Waiter, he consistently demonstrates professionalism, warmth, and natural talent.

In addition, he plays a leading role in our signature Dusabane cultural experience, where traditional dance and celebration are shared with guests. Through his leadership, organisation, and coaching of fellow performers, Jado helps create meaningful cultural connections and unforgettable memories for all who visit Bisate.

First aid refresher training

In May, we had the great opportunity to welcome a Rwandan first aid trainer who provided refresher training to our staff on essential first aid knowledge and skills. As we approach the peak season, our team is now better equipped to assist both our valued guests and colleagues in case of any incident or emergency.

The purpose of this training was to ensure that, in the event of an accident or medical situation, the team on the ground can confidently apply first aid procedures, follow evacuation protocols, and take the necessary steps before advanced medical care arrives.

Our staff greatly appreciated this valuable training, which will not only support them in their daily duties but also benefit them in their everyday lives.

Staff explore Bisate Concession surroundings

Apart from their daily duties, our staff also had the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour within our concession to explore the natural beauty and rich history surrounding Bisate. During their spare time, the team learned more about the wildlife and unique creatures found in our home surroundings, as well as the history of the Bisate and Volcanoes area.

Our lodge and community guides, William and Gaby, were delighted to take the team through our offerings, ensuring that everyone gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of the environment while enjoying the experience together.

Félicité, one of our star Service Team members, and Aline, one of our talented Chefs, shared their excitement:

‘At Bisate Wilderness Rwanda, we grow not only as staff but as a family connected by learning and nature. Moments like these in the wilderness sharpen our minds, expand our knowledge, and remind us that every experience outdoors is an opportunity to learn, explore, and appreciate the beauty around us.’

Their passion reflects the spirit of continuous learning, teamwork, and connection that defines life at Wilderness Bisate in Rwanda. Every adventure in our area offers new perspectives, deeper understanding, and lasting inspiration.
