Round-up from Rwanda’s Volcanoes area

September is always a particularly special time here in Rwanda. The weather is typically a perfect mix of clear and sunny mornings that crescendo into epic late afternoon downpours, ultimately easting into the magical purple sunsets that our region is famous for. This month has been no different, with the added thrill of the famous Congolese volcano Nyamuragira in the far distance showing some increased activity, leading to sights that had to been seen to be believed. We have also started the final phase of the much-anticipated Bisate Sanctuary build, with the wellness centre entering the final push stage that includes the very exciting arrival of our ridiculously talented design team, spearheaded by the indefatigable Caline Williams of Artichoke. I have had the pleasure of feasting my eyes on some of the plans and renders of the interiors, and I am now ‘chomping at the bit’ for this totem to tranquillity to finally open its doors. Stay tuned for more exciting updates.

Bisate bird of the month

This month’s Bird is the elusive and criminally underrated red-chested cuckoo. Known in South Africa as the Piet My Vrou (after its call), this infamous bird is renowned for its incessant whistle that – while unrelenting in the Kruger Park – is an absolute blessing here, as it means clear skies and the final quarter of the year. With the red-chested cuckoo, there also comes a more elusive bird, the tropical boubou… no sightings of this majestic visitor as of yet, but stay tuned as we have our best guides on the job! 😊

Our Bisate family news

The end if the month was particularly festive for the team at Bisate with our annual Heritage Day celebrations being held for our guests at the Kwanda day lounge. Our staff adorned themselves with the traditional umushunana and headwear, and demonstrated their traditional basket-weaving. Fun was had by all, and we were delighted to reflect on, and be proud of, where we come from and who we are. It is important to acknowledge that we come from a long line of successful people to reach where we are now and the ancestors of each individual deserve a fond acknowledgement from time to time.

Bisate reforestation

They came, they saw, and they – without a shadow of a doubt – conquered… alien species! No this is not a quote from the film ‘Starship Troopers’. It is the only way to describe what our reforestation team has done to the invasive population of eucalyptus trees on our volcanic crater’s northern bank. The team, comprising 15 of the village’s most strapping young lads led by our fearless Head Agronomist Jean Moise, ensured that these alien invaders will never see the light of day again. What makes this deal even better is that the wood harvested from the trees will be put to good use as fuel for our visitors’ room fireplaces, warming, and creating the romantic ambience that Bisate has become so famous for.

Your staff is amazing. Every single person we encountered was warm, friendly and highly focused on service. The food was also incredible. The villas were amazing. Everything was well done. Bravo! – J

Everything was over the top! The lodge is exquisite – every detail is more impressive than the next. From the architecture and design elements in the public areas to the exquisite humongous suites. Complete with kitchen, seating area and outdoor hot tub. I can’t say enough about the staff. The staff is very friendly and very attentive. They were able to accommodate all our strange dietary restrictions. They had everything you need for the gorilla trek- the raincoats, leg covering to backpacks and water bottles. I highly highly recommend Bisate. You will not be disappointed!!! – L&D

The food was amazing, the staff was amazing, the villas and main lodge are absolutely stunning. I had a magical time here and wish I could have stayed longer. Patrick, Gaby, William, Felicite, and everyone were truly incredible and so welcoming! Theres nothing quite like this lodge. One-of-a-kind and magical place! – M

Everyone at the lodge was so incredibly welcoming, kind, and professional. We’ve traveled all over the world and this by far is the most special place we’ve ever stayed at. No detail was overlooked. We’ll definitely recommend it to all of our friends. I also want to express how much we appreciate every member of staff going the extra mile for us when I wasn’t feeling well one night. The day we left, we stayed for a few hours at the Kwanda Day lounge and just like the main lodge, everyone went out of their way to be so helpful, friendly and professional. – R&P

Every single detail, big and small, had care and love infused. Food, smiles, flash light guide to rooms at the perfect time, massage, just remembering small things even. Little touches in the room and I was shocked to see treats and extra care even in our vehicle waiting for us. I thought I was coming for my love of animals and left with my left for Rwanda, the culture, and all of your staff. It was my honor to share any time in this sanctuary, and I look forward to recommitting and coming back. I Also’s learned sooooo much! It was a perfect mix of everything! – K

This is absolutely one of the most outstanding luxury lodges from around the world. The unique location, room designs are beyond expections, however  nothing can compare to nthe care, passion and experiences from the staff. It is truly remarkable and world class!! It is perfection!! – M&L

Everything! The decor, food, and service were outstanding! Ellie deserves special commendation. He went out of his way to make our anniversary stay the most memorable ever. The entire staff was the best we encountered in all of our time in Africa. Unfortunately I can’t remember everyone’s name but along with Ellie I do want to thank, Jackie, Jolly, Princess, Jado, William, and Innocent, who so kindly walked us to dinner and made amazing fires in our room. We feel like we made friends with the whole staff… they are so kind, courteous, and FUN to be with. I have never felt so emotional leaving a location but I was fighting back tears when leaving Bisate. Please let the staff know again (we had lots of hugs when we left) how truly amazing we think they all are. - L
