Late winter in the Linyanti

It’s August, and that means spring is knocking here at Linyanti Tented Camp (LTC). The temperatures are now averaging a minimum of 11°C, heading up to 34° C, and there were even a few scattered clouds visible for a few days, but no rainfall was recorded.

But being the tail end of the dry (winter) season, the vegetation and grasses are now completely dried out, as are the tree leaves. The water level in the channel has also not shown any changes in a while, despite the country receiving a tremendous amount of summer rainfall, not to mention the inundation from the Angolan highlands.

Sightings around Linyanti Tented Camp

Our seasoned guides spotted lions and leopards on occasion, though they suspect that many of the lions may have commuted to Chobe National Park or across the marsh into Namibia, while some have moved to the west towards the Savuti area.

The wild dogs have not been spotted in a while but their tracks were seen around the woodlands. The hyenas are denning and the cubs are growing well.

A huge herd of buffalo was also spotted around camp for a few days before disappearing into the woodland.

With the vegetation completely dried up, the general species have been visible in large numbers, especially around camp because the water sources in the woodlands have dried up and they come to our channel to drink.

We have seen a huge increase in the elephant population around camp, especially during the day. Large numbers of elephants occupy the swampy marsh in front of camp, including a number of breeding herds.

Since their return, we have had two incidents of ‘vandalism’ to the walkway already!

The impressive water monitor lizard was occasionally spotted around camp outside the water. No snakes or their trails have been spotted around camp yet as they are still in hibernation, especially our resident black mamba, which is usually spotted between the Back of House area and LTC West.

Prolific birdlife in the Linyanti area

Birds including African fish eagles, herons, egrets, and different species of geese have been seen around camp and from drives.

The lesser-striped swallow couple at LTC West’s main area have relocated again, after their eighth attempt at building a nest in the area collapsed once again, sadly breaking three eggs.

The swamp boubous are also still around the office and main area, as are a large number of guinea fowl all over camp.

Camp activities

Given the large number of elephants in the area, and based on the guides’ preferences, we’ve been using Strangler Fig (a bush brunch spot near Wilderness King’s Pool) and the Zibadianja Hide (a beautiful Star Bed sleep-out and bush brunch spot near DumaTau) to host our bush meals.

We have a sundowner spot just on the eastern side of camp called The Beach that is an exciting place for sundowners. It has a clear view of the sky, a good population of hippos in the water and a number of different species of game visible on the horizon. All our guests say how amazing it is, and always appreciate the set-ups.

Staff news

All our staff members are in good spirits. We do not have any new staff members and none has left camp, except for those on annual leave.
