Magashi in March

March arrived on the Magashi Concession along with the rains, bringing a renewed sense of energy and connection to our breathtaking setting in the north of Akagera National Park.

The landscape really came alive as the rains softened the earth, deepened the colours of the bush, and brought a sense of calm across the concession.

From the soft early morning hours to the late afternoon’s thrilling wildlife sightings, March was a time of growth, reminding us that Magashi is so much more than just a destination.

A month of wild encounters

March was, in many ways, the month of elephants. Herds moved steadily across the concession, their presence noted in all our areas, and often gathering along the shores of Lake Rwanyakizinga.

These gentle giants not only remained at the water’s edge, they stepped into the lake, wading deeper and at times swimming in its calm waters. Watching them move so freely and comfortably between land and water created rare and unforgettable sightings for our guests.

There were also moments when elephants were seen crossing the concession, occasionally moving closer to Magashi and Magashi Peninsula’s main areas. Here, they would pause to feed and rest, moving at their own ponderous pace. These encounters are always intensely special for our visitors unfamiliar with wild Africa.

At the same time, predator activity added its own special energy to the sightings. Lions were seen frequently, moving with ease across open spaces and often found relaxed and resting.

Leopards also made their presence known, with more consistent sightings than usual. These elusive animals were spotted resting up in trees, hidden among the branches, or moving silently through the bush. Each sighting felt like a small reward, thrilling both guests and guides alike.

Yet it was often in the evenings that the day found its perfect ending. As the sun set in tones of gold over Lake Rwanyakizinga, guests marvelled at the opportunity to be completely present.

Growing together: HR trainings & induction

A strong sense of growth carried through the team this month, shaped by sessions of learning. Our HR trainings provided great opportunities for shared ideas, and a deeper understanding of our vision.

At the same time, we welcomed new team members into the Magashi family through our induction programme, offering them a chance to understand not only their roles, but also the values and spirit that define life at Magashi, and the Wilderness Way.

For the wider team, it was an opportunity to reconnect with the standards that guide our daily work. For our new colleagues, it marked the start of a meaningful journey, and together, these experiences will build a stronger team, grounded in professionalism, care, and shared purpose.

Celebrating strength: International Women’s Day

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we took a moment to recognise and honour the incredible women who form the heart of Magashi.

Across the concession, we celebrated their dedication, resilience, and the strength they bring into every space. Whether engaging with guests or supporting operations behind the scenes, their contribution remains an essential part of what makes Magashi what it is.
The day was filled with laughter, stories, and heartfelt acknowledgements. We came together to show our appreciation, and were reminded that strength is not only found in individual effort, but also in how we support and uplift one another as a team.

Above all, it reaffirmed that when women are supported and valued, they uplift those around them, helping to shape a workplace, and a future, that is balanced, positive, and full of possibility.
