Wilderness Magashi Concession newsletter – May 2026

May was truly a spectacular month for wildlife around Magashi, and one of the most talked-about experiences involved a regular group of visitors that appeared almost daily, without the need for guests to go out on game drives.

Several elephant herds were frequently seen spending time in the lake directly in front of the guest rooms and main area. Guests enjoyed incredible views as these gentle giants swam, splashed, played, and cooled off in the water.

Many mornings and afternoons were spent watching the elephants emerge from the bush before entering the lake, completely unaware of the excitement they were creating in camp.

Although our team members have witnessed these moments many times before, the magic never fades. Every sighting feels unique.

For guests, especially those seeing wild elephants for the first time, the experience is unforgettable. The excitement, laughter, and amazement on their faces reminded us how fortunate we are to work in such a beautiful wilderness area.

The lions of Akagera continued to provide some of the most memorable wildlife sightings, and one of the biggest highlights was the continued monitoring of F23 and her cubs.

F23, a daughter of the famous lioness Amahoro, gave birth to four cubs earlier this year. Mahoro was one of the five female lions reintroduced to Rwanda in 2015, together with two males, as part of the historic lion restoration programme that successfully returned lions to Akagera National Park.

The cubs are now approximately two months old, and recent sightings have confirmed that there are three healthy youngsters that are growing well. Unfortunately, one cub has not been seen for some time and is believed to have been lost. While this is always sad news, it also reflects the realities and challenges of life in the wild.

Another exciting moment occurred when the Amahoro Pride spent time around the Magashi Peninsula area, allowing guests to enjoy exceptional sightings close to our magnificent new camp. Watching the pride resting comfortably near our vehicles is a reminder of the success of our responsible wildlife conservation-focused tourism.  

May also delivered one of the most special rhino sightings of the year. Guests and guides were fortunate to spend time observing Juru, one of Akagera National Park's most remarkable black rhinos.

Juru was born in the wild to his mother, Jasiri, after she was translocated from a zoological conservation programme in the Czech Republic in 2019. His birth represents an important milestone in Rwanda's black rhino conservation journey and demonstrates the success of Akagera's ongoing species restoration efforts.

What makes Juru particularly fascinating is his unique personality.
Black rhinos are generally solitary animals and prefer dense bush habitat, where they can remain hidden and undisturbed. However, Juru has developed a very unusual behaviour that continues to surprise guides and conservation teams.

He is frequently seen roaming the open plains and spending time alongside groups of white rhinos. This behavior is extremely rare and offers guests a unique wildlife experience that few safari destinations can provide.

During May, guests enjoyed excellent sightings of Juru standing calmly in open view near a white rhino. The encounter provided fantastic photographic opportunities and became one of the month's most memorable sightings.

At the same time, the Kitchen team explored beverage pairing principles, tasting different drinks and learning how carefully selected drinks complement flavours and elevate the overall dining experience.
These sessions encouraged communication, creativity, and mutual respect between departments. Most importantly, they reinforced a shared goal: delivering exceptional dining experiences that become part of our guests' lasting safari memories.
