A month of wildlife wonder & heartfelt connections

November at Wilderness Magashi and Magashi Peninsula unfolded in a seamless blend of movement, life, and emotion. It was a month where the wilderness felt especially alive, starting with the return of elephants to the lakeshore, the drama of hippos displaying, the surprise reappearance of a resident leopard, and the joy of welcoming guests from around the world.

Every sunrise and sunset brought sightings that reminded us why our Magashi Concession is often described as a place that is difficult to leave.

A month of wildlife magic

One of the happiest wildlife highlights of November was the return of the elephants to our Magashi Concession. Guests were thrilled to see these gentle giants feeding and moving quietly near their suites, happily watching them swim and play in the waters of Lake Rwanyakazinga – from their balconies, during boat excursions, or while relaxing in the main area. The elephants’ presence brought a sense of peace and connection unique to their species.

The hippos were equally active throughout the month, showing natural territorial behaviour that added a sense of drama to the wetlands. Their sounds and movements, especially in the early mornings and evenings, reminded everyone of the powerful life that thrives in Magashi’s waterways.

Across the concession, wildlife sightings were consistent, varied, and truly beautiful. Whether during early morning game drives or gentle sunset boat safaris, guests enjoyed experiences filled with fresh stories each day. What makes Magashi special is that even familiar wildlife moments never feel the same. Different angles, changing light, and unique animal behaviour make every encounter new and memorable.

A busy month of guests

With high occupancy throughout November, Magashi Concession welcomed a rich mix of guests. We hosted educational groups representing different countries and organisations, as well as explorers celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, and personal retreats. Others arrived simply to enjoy the wilderness and immerse themselves in Rwanda’s natural beauty.

Regardless of their purpose, every guest carried the same impression by the end of their stay: Magashi feels like a small paradise. The combination of peaceful landscapes, intimate wildlife experiences, and the warmth of the team made November especially meaningful. We were honoured to share the story of Akagera National Park, the unique beauty of our particular area, and the kindness that defines Wilderness hospitality.

Beautiful moments at Magashi Peninsula

The month was also a remarkable one for our recently opened property, Wilderness Magashi Peninsula. The two luxurious units and the magnificent private Villa continued to attract admiration for their elegance, comfort, and connection to nature. Interestingly, wildlife also seemed drawn to the Peninsula this month.

Guests experienced truly unforgettable moments right from their rooms, as elephants wandered quietly by, offering an authentic glimpse into their world. At the pontoon mooring, these gentle giants often paused with ponderous curiosity, taking their time to explore before returning to the water for an unhurried swim. Each of these close, natural encounters carried a sense of magic – calm, intimate, and deeply moving. They left guests with memories to treasure, and reaffirmed Peninsula as a beloved new sanctuary for both people and wildlife in Akagera.

A rare and wonderful surprise – the return of a familiar leopard

Leopard sightings have been quite rare in recent months, with long periods passing without an encounter. However, November brought a surprising and delightful change. As construction activities around Peninsula slowed down, the male leopard that once used that area as its territory returned.

The leopard’s reappearance created great excitement among guests and guides, and several daytime sightings were recorded. These moments were filled with appreciation, joy, and disbelief for many guests, who described the experience as once-in-a-lifetime. The return of the leopard was a wonderful reminder of how responsive wildlife is to the environment, and how conservation efforts continue to shape the future of Akagera.

A calm and confident lion month

The lions of Magashi were seen throughout November. After feeding, many of them spent long hours resting in the shade, completely relaxed, even when vehicles approached. Guests observed them in their natural and undisturbed state, offering a true understanding of the gentle rhythm of lion life in Akagera. The long quiet moments beside them were as meaningful as the active ones, creating unforgettable memories.

Our gratitude

To the Magashi Concession team, thank you for your continued passion, dedication, and the warmth you bring to every guest experience. Many guests shared the same words: ‘The place is beautiful, but the people make it unforgettable’. Your hard work and spirit are what make Magashi feel like home for so many.

To our guests, thank you for choosing to spend your time with us, for sharing your stories, and for bringing your positive energy to our concession. Your presence brings life to every month, and we are deeply grateful for each moment shared together.
