Dry season in full swing in Akagera

As we headed deeper into the dry season and the landscape opened up, June brought a wave of transformation to Magashi. From inspiring conservation milestones and team expansion to thrilling wildlife moments, the month reminded us of our purpose: to protect, share, and celebrate this exceptional corner of Akagera National Park.

Rare sightings & lion mysteries at Magashi

Although we had slightly fewer leopard sightings than in May, what we did witness was extraordinary. One unforgettable scene involved Amahoro (one of Magashi’s most iconic lionesses). Guests were fortunate to witness Amahoro and her older daughters on a zebra kill. Their faces were soaked with fresh blood, and the scene offered a powerful reminder of nature’s raw beauty.

Our guides have been closely monitoring Amahoro’s behaviour and believe she may still be hiding her newest cubs due to their young age. Subtle tracks and patterns suggest she is preparing to introduce them to the world, possibly right here in Magashi, which remains her favoured territory. We watch and wait, hoping to witness their first appearance.

White rhinos arrive in the north of Akagera

A landmark conservation achievement was marked this month with African Parks’ successful translocation of 70 white rhinos from a private reserve in South Africa to Akagera National Park.

Thirty-five of these rhinos have settled in the northern part of the park close to Magashi. This historic event marks a major step forward in Rwanda’s conservation journey. Several of our guests had the opportunity to include a white rhino tracking experience during their stay, contributing not just their time, but also making generous donations towards rhino protection efforts.

These funds help support daily monitoring and veterinary care, ensuring that each rhino is given the best chance to adapt and thrive. We are proud to be part of this story and grateful to our guests for playing a role too.

Training the next generation of guides

We had the great pleasure of welcoming Cilas from Botswana, who led an intensive workshop for our new Trainee Guides. His presence and knowledge were a great asset, as we prepare for the opening of Wilderness Magashi Peninsula and continue to deliver the highest standards in guiding.

This month, four promising new guides joined our Magashi family:

  • Bosco Iradukunda: Formerly part of the service team at Wilderness Bisate, Bosco followed his passion for guiding by pursuing further self-training. After one-and-a-half years of freelancing, he applied to Magashi, and we are happy to share that his dream of rejoining Wilderness has come true.
  • Marcelin Kabengera, Innocent Terebushi, and Abdul Mutsinzi – These three passionate individuals have been working as freelance guides in the southern sector of Akagera. Their dream has always been to work for a company like Wilderness, and we are delighted to now have them on board.

Their passion, commitment, and deep love for conservation and storytelling make them valuable additions to our guiding team.

While May brought dramatic predator encounters and team-wide development, June stood out for its expansion and conservation focus. From welcoming new life and new team members, to hosting white rhinos for the first time in northern Akagera, we are moving forward — with pride, gratitude, and purpose.

Thank you to our dedicated team, valued guests, and partners for making this journey special.
