Hello from Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains!

As we edge closer to the end of the year, we can’t help but reflect on how memorable 2025 has been at Wilderness Sabyinyo. From misty mornings to golden sunsets over the volcanic peaks, every month has brought its own magic, and November was no exception. It’s the season where the lodge feels like a warm embrace: mist curling around the rooftops in the evenings, followed by crisp mornings that make the mountains sparkle like they’ve been freshly polished. Perfect for cosy fireside chats, and adventurous treks the next day!

Guest highlights: quiet but memorable

November was quieter than usual, and guests made the most of every moment. The rains were gentler compared to last year, making early morning treks less tiring and even more rewarding. The gorillas were closer to the park borders, which meant shorter hikes and more time back at the lodge for afternoon delights like birdwatching, nature walks, and community visits.

We also welcomed more solo travelers and couples – all fearless adventurers chasing gorilla encounters and personal stories. Here at Sabyinyo, whether you arrive alone, or with friends, or family, you’ll always find a home. Add to that the site inspections from our valued travel agents – giving them first-hand experience of Sabyinyo’s charm so they can answer guests’ questions with confidence – and November felt like a month of truly meaningful connections.

Conservation corner: planting hope

Rainy season equals perfect tree-planting weather! Our team rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty (in the best way) as part of our reforestation efforts. Every sapling we planted is a promise for a greener tomorrow for Rwanda’s highlands, as well as thriving habitat for wildlife.

This season, we planted a variety of native species, including Dombeya, Hagenia, and mountain bamboo; each plays a vital role in restoring biodiversity and stabilising the ecosystem. It’s hard work, but when you see those tiny green shoots pushing through the soil… And the results are already showing! As the forest regenerates, more animals are returning and making Sabyinyo their home, from playful primates to vibrant bird species. These signs of life remind us why every muddy boot and planted tree matters.

Sabyinyo staff spotlight

While guests were out trekking or relaxing, our maintenance crew was making magic happen behind the scenes. From keeping the lodge warm and welcoming, to fixing those ‘little things’, these heroes keep Sabyinyo running like a dream. We’re also expanding our tree nursery to support reforestation efforts, and growing our vegetable garden, ensuring fresh, sustainable produce for the lodge. These upgrades aren’t just about infrastructure, they’re about investing in our people and our planet.

November was all so much because excellence starts where no one is looking. One exciting project underway is the revamp of our staff area and village, creating a more comfortable and functional space for the team that makes it all happen. The renovations are gradual but meaningful, better living spaces, improved communal areas, and upgrades that show how much we value our people.
