In general, Rwandan schools have limited access to proper menstrual hygiene management resources, which leads to a number of challenges for girls during their period.

For Bisate Secondary School’s 325 female learners, this lack of sanitary supplies means a constant struggle to attend school and continue their studies during their periods.

Now, thanks to a generous donation from guests Robert and Alison Green, CITW Rwanda has been able to support the girls with a reusable sanitary pack each.

The sustainable sanitary packs consist of two pairs of underwear and six re-usable pads, packed together in a pretty kitenge fabric purse. A further supply of 110 reusable sanitary pads was provided, to be kept in the specially constructed girls room at the school for girls who whose periods may have started while they are at school. These sanitary pads are of very high quality, and will make a significant difference to the lives of the girls.

The re-usable, eco-friendly packs are made by Muhisimbi Voice of Youth in Conservation, a local non-profit project that supports teenage mothers in the surrounding villages. In this way, we also provide sewing jobs for these young women, further fulfilling Wilderness’ Impact commitment to support community empowerment.

The 435 reusable sanitary packs are valued at USD 8,700.

‘The reasoning behind providing specifically reusable sanitary pads for the girls naturally includes environmental sustainability and waste reduction, as well as conserving natural resource and health benefits, and promoting body awareness,’ said Nkuriragenda Jean Damascene, CITW Rwanda Community Assistant.

‘We extend our sincere thanks to Robert and Allison who sponsored the donation, as well as the school leaders for their assistance in implementing this project,’ added Jean Damascene.
