Tendai Mdluli began his career with Wilderness Safaris in 1997, the year he obtained his learner guide’s licence in Zimbabwe. He became a fully fledged Professional Guide a few years later, and has never looked back.

With over 22 years’ experience with Wilderness Safaris, Tendai’s unique knowledge and blend of guiding, operational and sales experience, ensures that his guiding team is able to receive world-class training in order to deliver life-changing journeys to guests at the company’s camps and lodges in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Born in Mutare in eastern Zimbabwe, Tendai’s family relocated to the north-west of the country while he was still young, settling in Lusulu in the Binga District. What began as just childhood fun, playing among friends in the surrounding wilderness, grew to become a lifetime passion for Tendai. His school field trips into Chizarira National Park also gave him insight into what would become his future in the wilderness.

While assisting various safari companies with administration work at the start of his career, Tendai became acquainted with a Wilderness guide who sparked his desire to share the beauty of the wild places of Zimbabwe with the rest of the world. During his years with the company, Tendai has also managed several Wilderness Safaris camps in Hwange National Park.

In 2013, after more than 15 years’ experience in both guiding and managing camps, Tendai was appointed Relationship Manager for Wilderness Safaris Zambia and Zimbabwe. In this way he became an important link between Wilderness Safaris and the travel trade business, using his thorough understanding of the region and its offerings to assist agents in growing their business to the Zambezi region.

In addition to his role as Trade and Relationship Manager, Tendai spearheads a culture of excellence as Guides Training Coordinator for the region. His experience in the bush and a lifetime spent in Zimbabwe’s remote wilderness areas, as well as his eye for service excellence, plays an important part in maintaining the unmatched knowledge and skills of these guides.

Tendai’s role regularly takes him through the camps to spend hands-on time with the guides, imparting his invaluable knowledge and experience to all. This critical role helps to ensure that Wilderness Safaris remains the forerunner in the safari industry, both regionally and further afield.

“Working out in the field, I was privileged to be a part of Wilderness Safaris’ rhino introduction into Hwange National Park a few years ago, and to spend time in several concession areas within prime wildlife areas in Zimbabwe. My journey with Wilderness Safaris has given me enormous opportunities to visit other regions, as well as to travel abroad. I feel privileged to promote this exceptional region to our international partners, and ensure that our guides remain the best in the business”, notes Tendai.
