A Qorokwe Honeymoon

A cheetah on a log scanning the plain for prey

‘Qorokwe’ (pronounced Ko-ro-kwe) means tthe place where the buffalo broke through the bush into the water’.

There is no English word for this.

To me, it will always be… the place where the cheetah took down a kudu calf on our first game drive on honeymoon.

A few days after our wedding, my husband and I had just touched down at the camp’s airstrip when a couple from Guatemala who’d arrived on the same flight asked if we had ever seen a kill. We’d just been introduced to our guide, Jacob Saobe, who tried to explain the odds: being in the right place at the right time, with the wind in your favour, the light just so, the prey unaware, the proximity to the road...

A hundred holes have to line up, and a lot of the time they don’t, I explained. But less than 24 hours later, I was happy to eat my words.

From a distance, Jacob spotted a female cheetah standing tall on a fallen tree stump, eyes scanning, tail twitching.

A small herd of kudu came into view across the plain. Browsing as they went, they seemed unaware of the cat that had dropped off her perch, ears flat against her head. Body low, she began her slow approach through the grass.

It happened so quickly, and so quietly, we thought she’d failed. Keeping to the narrow two-track on the edge of the plain, it took Jacob a minute to catch up to where we’d seen her halt in the shade of a short lala palm. But there she was, prize clamped between her jaws, panting from the effort.

I shouldn’t have been so surprised; Qorokwe is known for its population of predators, as it’s one of the few places in Africa that has reliable populations of all three big cat species.

A camp of style and substance

Qorokwe is set on a private 26, 000-hectare (64, 000 acre) concession on the southeastern edge of the famed Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The landscapes here are a patchwork of floodplains, acacia woodlands, palm-dotted islands and channels that shift with the seasons.

The camp itself is striking. Elevated wooden decks thread between termite mounds and fig trees, leading to nine contemporary suites, including one family suite with its own plunge pool. With clean lines and earthy tones, the design blends steel frames and canvas with natural textures, creating spaces that feel stylish yet rooted in place. Each tented room opens to sweeping views of the floodplains, ensuring that even quiet moments – a morning coffee, an afternoon siesta –are punctuated by wildlife sightings.

Activities that define the Delta

What makes Qorokwe exceptional is the breadth of experiences it offers. With both land and water habitats, guests can experience the full diversity of the Okavango in a single stay.

Game Drives

Morning and afternoon drives reveal a high density of predators, huge herds of buffalo, giraffe browsing treetops and an abundance of birds. We spotted a pair of bat-eared foxes jump-hunting through the grass one morning, and spent plenty time with elephants (which often appear right in camp).

Because Qorokwe is on private land, night drives are possible too – a chance to glimpse the Delta’s more elusive inhabitants: civets, genets, or hyenas on the move. Just as we were returning to camp one evening, a male leopard disappeared into the reeds. That night, we heard his rasping call from the comfort of our suite.

Mokoro Excursions

Perhaps the most iconic of all Okavango experiences is the mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe poled gently through reed-lined waterways.

As comfortable upright poling a mokoro as he is behind the wheel of a Land Cruiser, Jacob led the way through the channels one evening. We followed, as our expert poler Chris pointed out lilies and jacanas, nearly eye level to us.

The world seems to slow on an evening in a mokoro. The quiet glide, the frog chorus, the sudden flash of a malachite kingfisher. Downstream, a hippo grunted, and Jacob reassured us that we wouldn’t be heading much further down. He picked up speed ahead of us, and by the time we returned to the vehicle he was arranging cold champagne and flutes on the bonnet, just as the sky began to dress in sunset colours.

Boating

When water levels are high enough, Qorokwe offers boat excursions into the labyrinth of lagoons and channels.

Boat trips bring you closer to the watery heart of this ecosystem; skim across mirrored surfaces where lilies bloom, watch crocodiles sunning on sandy banks, and listen out for the cry of an African fish eagle echoing above.

Guided walks

A walking safari offers the rare chance to experience the Delta at eye level: to read tracks in the sand, notice insects at work, and appreciate the subtleties of smell, sound, and texture that are often missed from a vehicle. Guided walks at Qorokwe are available on request and are strictly seasonal, offered only when visibility and safety conditions allow. We visited during the transition period between March and June, when the vegetation was thick, making walking less favourable.

In-camp indulgence

Back at camp, in-room massages offer a simple and welcome reset between activities. Treatments can be tailored to what you need most, whether that’s easing tension or just taking half an hour to switch off.

Qorokwe’s in-house therapist arrived with everything needed, turning our private deck into a quiet, comfortable treatment space. White-faced whistling ducks lulled me to sleep as she worked, and and I emerged loosened, clear-headed, and ready for the afternoon drive.

Romance in the Wild

For honeymooners or those celebrating anniversaries or other special occasions, the team at Qorokwe delights in surprises.

One evening, we were led to the pool deck for a private dinner. Champagne on ice, lanterns glowing, and smiles from a team who made the whole evening feel like it was planned just for us. Just as we finished our main course, a summer storm swept in suddenly. Within seconds the lanterns flickered out and the rain hammered down, the floodplains illuminated by lightning. Staff immediately rushed in and we all worked to rescue the table, rushing up the steps and battening down the canvas hatches. Instead of disappointment, there was laughter; wet and grinning, we waited out the storm in the main area, warmed by a fresh cup of coffee.

Seasons of contrast

The Delta is never the same twice. In the green season (December to March), dramatic skies and vivid vegetation create a lush backdrop, with many animals calving and birdlife at its peak. In the drier months (May to October), water is scarcer, drawing wildlife to channels and floodplains, and making game viewing easier. Both offer their own magic, and Qorokwe is perfectly placed to showcase the contrasts.

A place of your own

Qorokwe is more than a camp. It’s a place of first sightings and lasting stories. Whether sipping champagne by lantern light, gliding in a mokoro, or watching a lion pride stalk across the floodplain, Qorokwe becomes personal.

To me, it will always be… the place where the Delta slowed us, surprised us, and swept us up: in big-cat encounters, summer storms, mokoro stillness, and effortless but unforgettable hospitality.
