A brighter chapter for Wilderness Chitabe Lediba

On the south-eastern periphery of the Delta, on a tree island in the centre of the Chitabe Concession, is Wilderness Chitabe Lediba. Here, open floodplains, riverine woodland and sprawling grasslands create an extraordinary safari destination, renowned for its outstanding year-round game viewing. 

Visiting as the waters had started to rise, I felt as though I had a front-row seat to the wild in more ways than one.

The expansive main deck has views over the surrounding floodplains and a small lediba (remnant lagoon waterhole), with an almost constant stream of animals coming to drink. Chitabe Lediba is also situated on a corridor for elephants moving to and from the Delta. They easily shake the towering fruit-laden palms to feast on the palm nuts, attracting baboons that pick up the leftovers. Add the chance of exciting predator sightings on game drives, from cheetahs, its famous leopards and wild dogs, to lions powering through waters and climbing trees, along with remarkable birdlife, and guided walks, and it quickly becomes a very rewarding safari experience.

But Chitabe Lediba’s attraction lies as much in the luxury of the camp as its location. With only five tented-style rooms (sister camp Chitabe has eight), it’s an intimate, soothing space. I found myself drawn to the deck, binoculars in hand, following birds swooping over the water. From there, a quick cool down in the pool with a view, and on to the lounger. While it feels like it’s just you and the bush, the staff are – discreetly – always around, offering a drink, a fresh towel, or helping identify a bird. 

And now, a thoughtful refurbishment has added another layer to that feeling of being enveloped in warmth and welcome.

Returning guests will notice a lighter, brighter feel to the rooms. The suites have been refreshed with new carpets, an updated colour palette and striking artwork incorporated into the headboards, with each room given its own distinct character. 

Added comforts include marble-topped tea stations in every room, complete with a bar fridge, Nespresso machine and kettle. For the warmer months, mobile evaporative coolers can be moved around the room as needed, providing relief during the heat of the day. Bathrooms have also been upgraded with LED mirrors for improved lighting.

A couch at the foot of the bed provides the perfect place to pause between activities, coffee in hand, while taking in the views. The outdoor spaces have received just as much attention. New outdoor mats, comfortable chairs and drinks tables create inviting areas to sit back and enjoy fresh air, birdsong and the possibility of wildlife wandering past.

While the wildlife, guiding and heartfelt hospitality remain the reason guests return to Chitabe Lediba time and again, the refurbishment adds a renewed sense of comfort and ease to the experience.

Not that this corner of the Delta needed any help winning people over.
