African safari & beach holidays, why combine both?

A safari and beach holiday gives you the best of both worlds in one twin city- or combination itinerary. After experiencing the thrilling intensity of the wild, there is no better place to come back to Earth than on the white sands of a beach resort. And with the Indian Ocean coastline and islands just a short flight from many of our most popular African safari destinations, combining the two in one holiday is honestly effortless.

Whether travelling as a couple for your honeymoon or getting away on a multi-generational family adventure, Wilderness can help arrange a holiday combining both safari and beach, with end-to-end routing, accommodation at properties aligned to your needs and interests, and all activities, transfers and logistics taken care of. All you need to worry about is your sundowner order or where you left the sunscreen (although we've probably got that covered too).

Where to go for a safari & beach combination

Cape Town Horse riding Wilderness Touring

East Africa offers some of the best beach and safari holidays from the UK, due to simple routing. In Kenya, go from the plains of the Masai Mara or Amboseli, with their vast antelope herds and impressive elephants, to the coast were dhows drift past at sunset. Tanzania offers a similar approach: a safari in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro contrasting with the spice and salt air of Zanzibar.

Southern Africa also offers excellent beach and safari holidays. Combine Botswana's Okavango Delta or Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park with the wild coastline and island hideaways of Mozambique, where whale sharks and dugongs provide a different wildlife experience. South Africa's Kruger or Sabi Sand and Namibia's desert safari camps are the ideal fit for travellers looking to add a South African oceanside leg.

And don't forget the all-inclusive resorts of Mauritius or the quiet luxury of the Seychelles, which can also easily be added on to your African safari and beach holiday.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year for an African safari and beach holiday?

It's almost always a good time for beach and safari holidays in Africa. The classic safari months are generally June to October, when the bush is drier and wildlife is easier to spot. This time also aligns beautifully with an Indian Ocean beach holiday as days are generally warm and sunny. November to March can bring showers in many safari and beach holiday destinations in Africa but these sporadic rains often provide welcome relief from the heat. The shoulder months (roughly April to June and September to November) tend to strike the ideal balance between calm seas, comfortable temperatures, and lighter crowds. However, there isn't really a bad time to book your safari and beach package.

How long should a safari and beach holiday in Africa be?

If you want to really relax and enjoy your luxury safari and beach holiday it's best to book around 10 to 14 nights. This would typically give you between 3 to 5 nights on safari and 5 to 7 nights on the coast. If you want to extend your stay across multiple safari regions, you'll want to add in a few extra nights for lodge transfers and possible city connections. That said, shorter trips can work in certain beach and safari destinations where charter flights or private transfers allow for seamless connections.
