Is a safari suitable for seniors or older travellers?
Absolutely. In particular a safari with Wilderness is exceptionally well suited to senior travellers, as it offers ease, comfort, space, and safety with meaningful wildlife experiences. We design complete end to end safari experiences, with our camps offering the flexibility to shape each day around your personal energy levels and interests, whether that’s daily game drives, relaxing in the spa or enjoying a sundowner on a barge while elephants and hippos bathe nearby. Rather than being physically demanding, a Wilderness safari is designed to be immersive and restorative, where time in nature is enjoyed at your leisure and every detail is taken care of, from your transfers, to city stays and tours, and everything in between. We also boast our own airline in Wilderness Air and an internal integrated risk management function in Wilderness24 to attend to any need that could arise pre, during or even post travel.
What makes a safari comfortable for seniors?
Comfort on a Wilderness safari comes from our thoughtful camp design, excellent guiding and high staff-to-guest ratios, and the ability to personalise each experience. Suites are spacious and well-appointed with en-suite bathrooms, private decks, and easy access to the main camp areas, often along boardwalks, making day-to-day movement easy. Game drives can be adjusted in duration and timing, especially if you book a private vehicle, and between activities there is always the option to return to the privacy of one’s suite for a siesta or enjoy the communal spaces, such as the pool, or spa and gym depending of your choice at camp. Plus you can just sit back and relax knowing all your meals are taken care of.
Which African destinations are best for seniors?
All of the Wilderness camps can cater to seniors but Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Linyanti regions are standout choices as they are easily reached and offer the option of pairing water and land safaris. Namibia is another strong option for a senior safari, with its dramatic landscapes and scenic journeys offering a chance to really just get away from it all. For those who have been there and done that, Zambia and Zimbabwe are also excellent for repeat safari travellers seeking authentic guiding and quieter wilderness areas.
Do Wilderness camps cater for mobility or health considerations?
While each Wilderness camp is shaped around its natural environment, many are suitable for guests with mobility challenges and our team will work closely with you to understand your individual needs in advance. We also have our own proprietary incident management function, Wilderness 24, that acts as a central hub during any event. To ensure the highest level of clinical insight, we have fully integrated Park.Doctor into this system. As our dedicated medical partner, Park.Doctor provides 24/7 tele-medical support and expert care co-ordination, ensuring that even in the most remote locations, you are never more than a call away from specialist medical intelligence.
What’s included in a private vehicle safari?
A private vehicle safari is a way to ensure that you get a personalised and flexible experience. At an extra cost and subject to availability, a dedicated safari vehicle will be reserved solely for you, along with a professional Wilderness guide who will remain with you, even travelling from camp to camp if you desire, to ensure that every experience in tailored to your needs. This means there is complete freedom to decide when to depart, how long to stay out, and what to focus on, whether that is predator viewing, photography, birding, or simply slow, scenic exploration. A private vehicle also gives you the option to be flexible with where your meals are enjoyed, lingering over a bush picnic or enjoying sundowners near a productive waterhole.
