The wild at night
The wild at night
Under cover of darkness, the bush comes alive in a new way. Nocturnal predators are on the move and prey species are on high alert. Look out for wildlife not seen during the day, listen for owls and nightjars, and learn more about the extraordinary southern night sky. Our expert safari guides will help you uncover the magic of a nighttime safari.

The experience
What is a night safari?
At select camps, weather depending, night drives can begin before or after dinner. Your guide will scan the bush using an infrared spotlight, and perhaps give you the chance to do the same, searching for signs of movement and tracks that may lead to wildlife.

Staying safe
As ever, our guides follow strict safety protocols at night, and stay in constant communication with camp via radio. Simply follow their guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Naturally, we also use our spotlights carefully to ensure wildlife is never disturbed.

Expert guides
Our guides interpret the animal calls, tracks, and movement just as they do in the day. But unlike in the daytime, they also have eyeshine to interpret. A red iridescence often indicates big cats like leopards, while yellow-green shine could be that of herbivores like impala and other antelope.

Stargazing
Stargazing is another unforgettable part of the night drive experience, with guides weaving stories using both African and Greek starlore to contextualise the brilliant canopy overhead. With so little light pollution at our camps, the stars are unimaginably abundant.
Stargazing
The thrill of the hunt
While wildlife spotting is much more challenging in the dark, often, the excitement is in the looking itself. Surrender to your senses and enjoy the magic of the wild after dark. Animal and bird calls, star-strewn skies, a chorus of bell frogs, and cool evening breezes – they all come together to make night safaris truly memorable.

Planning your night safari
While many of our camps offer night drives, it’s always best to speak to your Travel Designer in advance. They’ll advise if night drives are available at your chosen camps, and during your dates of travel.

Best time of year for night drives
Night drives are usually best during dry seasons (which differ by country and region) when sparse vegetation makes wildlife spotting easier, and the absence of rain makes longer drives possible.

What to bring
Simply dress as you do for a daytime drive, with the addition of some warm layers, and bring along your camera, binoculars, and whatever else you may need. Your guide will have an infrared spotlight in the vehicle, as well as hot water bottles and blankets on request.
