A different side of Africa
Water-based safaris
Water-based safaris offer a unique way to experience Africa. Move quietly along channels by mokoro looking for birds or frogs, explore rivers by canoe or boat, and watch wildlife like elephants and hippos from a barge or pontoon.
Wilderness and water
Wilderness and water
All our great wildlife areas are shaped by water, from the Delta waters of the Okavango, creating shifting channels and lagoons, to the steady flow of the Zambezi River thundering over the Victoria Falls, and the marshlands of the Mababe providing a seasonal refuge for wildlife. With decades of experience guiding guests, we understand how to design a safari showcasing Africa’s waterways.

Water-based activities
Life on the water
Water-based safaris unfold at a slower pace. You may watch from a boat as hippos surface, elephants wade, and a crocodile basks on a sun-warmed bank; or glide quietly along while kingfishers flash between the reeds, perhaps spotting an aquatic antelope in the floodplain. Discover how rivers gives life along their paths and enjoy the stillness and reflection that comes from the water.

Mokoro safaris
A mokoro trip is one of the most iconic experiences in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. At water level in a traditional dugout canoe, you are gently poled through quiet channels by a skilled guide. There is no rush. The experience is all about noticing the smaller details. Drift close to reed frogs, see waterlilies up close, and study birds without disturbance. It is immersive and intimate.

Boat safaris
Boat safaris are available at a number of our African destinations, from northern Namibia, to the Zambezi River at the Victoria Falls and Zambezi Valley, to Rwanda’s tranquil Lake Rwanyakazinga, and Botswana’s Linyanti. Wildlife gazes back from the water’s edge, excellent photographic opportunities abound, and sundowners on the water offer a different perspective of these remote places.

Canoeing & fishing
At Wilderness camps in Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park, canoeing offers a more active way to explore the Zambezi. And at select camps across our destinations, catch-and-release fishing is also available seasonally. These activities allow you different ways to interact with these aquatic ecosystems, always remaining respectful of the life they sustain.

Barges & pontoons
For a relaxed, sociable experience on the water, we offer barge and pontoon excursions from certain camps. These larger, stable vessels are ideal for sunset outings or even meals on the water. With space to move, and elevated views, you can bask in the golden light, marvel at the wildlife, and enjoy unhurried game-viewing. The perfect way to end to a day in the wild.

Mokoros in the Okavango Delta
Seated at water level, a mokoro offers a unique perspective of the Delta’s waterways. Although now crafted from fibreglass to protect hardwood forests, the mokoro was traditionally carved from trees, and used by Botswana’s rural residents for fishing and travel. There is an art to poling it: the guide stands at the stern, reading depth and current with each measured push against the sandy bed.
Water wildlife

Hippos & elephants
These gentle giants, often seen on the banks or in the channels, are always observed from a respectful distance.

Crocodiles
These ancient predators lie on sunny sandbanks or may be spotted gliding below the surface, with barely a ripple.

Birds
Kingfishers, jacanas, storks and bee-eaters fill the reeds and skies creating a dream setting for birders.

Aquatic life
Fish, frogs and waterlilies thrive in a rich web of life; here you have the opportunity to see them up close.
Where can you go on a water safari?
Water shapes each Wilderness destination differently. From an inland delta, to powerful rivers, desert waterways and vast lakes, each of our regions offers distinct water-based safari experiences. Channels, lagoons and rivers all influence wildlife movements and give a unique perspective to the safari experience.

Botswana
In Botswana, the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti offer rewarding water safaris. The seasonal inflow transforms dry channels into navigable waterways, shaping wildlife movement. Mokoros glide through reed-lined lagoons, while boat safaris explore deeper arteries where elephants wade. Birdlife is prolific, and the ever-changing water levels ensure that no two Botswana experiences are the same.

Zambia
In Zambia, rivers shapes two distinct experiences. In Kafue National Park, seasonal boat safaris explore channels where red lechwe move through wetlands and elephants gather along remote banks. At Wilderness Toka Leya, just upstream of Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, sunset cruises reveal hippos, crocodiles and birdlife watched with a cocktail and canape in hand.

Namibia
In Namibia’s desertscape, water is naturally rare. Along the Kunene River at Wilderness Serra Cafema in the far north, its riverine oasis creates a stark contrast to the arid landscape. Plant life flourishes along this lifeline and seasonal boating here offers a perspective few expect in Namibia, the seasonal waters in contrast to the dramatic escarpment and distant mountains.

Zimbabwe
In Zimbabwe, the Zambezi River shapes activities in Mana Pools National Park. Canoeing here provides an adventurous way to explore, while late afternoon boating on this legendary watercourse creates some of Southern Africa’s most memorable safari scenes. Catch-and-release fishing provides a fun opportunity for families to bond on the water.

Rwanda
In Akagera National Park, Lake Rwanyakazinga supports great diversity. Boat and pontoon excursions reveal hippos and crocodiles, as well as land species from the water, including elephants, rhino and lions – and even the concession’s famous fishing leopard. It adds contrast to Rwanda’s rainforest and volcanoes, and offers a distinctive water-based dimension to an East African safari.

South Africa
Cape Town is great add on to your safari and its beautiful coastline offers a wide range of water-based activities and tours. Enjoy kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddling with a chance to see dolphins, while there are also opportunities for surfing, sailing, deep-sea fishing, boat cruises, whale watching, shark cage diving and snorkelling.

Your water safari with Wilderness
Water-based safaris may feel effortless, but they rely on detailed planning and regional knowledge. Activities are influenced by seasonal water levels, wildlife movement and safety considerations. Boats are maintained to strict standards, launch sites are carefully selected and daily conditions are assessed before departure. Behind every experience is a team ensuring a seamless experience.

Safety first
Safety underpins every water activity. Guides and boat captains undergo rigorous training and certification, with regular refreshers. Life jackets meeting international standards are provided, and thorough briefings take place before each activity. Water depth, currents and wildlife behaviour are continually assessed, ensuring that exploration remains responsible, controlled and respectful.

Seasonal variations
In regions such as the Okavango Delta, water levels change dramatically with seasonal floodwaters arriving from Angola months after local rains. These shifts influence which channels are navigable, where wildlife congregates and what experiences are possible. We adapt activities to these natural rhythms, with each safari attuned to current conditions.

Skilled polers & guides
Standing at the stern, our Batswana mokoro polers read subtle changes in depth and current with each push of their 'nkashi' (long wooden pole). Many come from communities that have navigated these waterways for generations. Boat captains bring similar experience, understanding channel systems, wildlife behaviour and shifting sandbanks.

Photography from the water
Photographing from a boat or mokoro offers refreshing new angles. Sitting low creates powerful eye-level compositions, especially of elephants or birds. Early morning and late afternoon light enhance reflections. Our guides position their vessels carefully, allowing photographers to work with natural light and mood without disturbing wildlife.

Plan your water journey
Choosing the right water-based safari depends on the experience you want. Consider whether you prefer the intimate silence of mokoro channels, the wider perspectives of boat safaris, or a mix of both. Each region offers something different and our Travel Designers will help you understand wildlife patterns, water levels and camp locations, to craft a journey specifically for you.

When to go
In Botswana, high-water months from May to August are ideal for mokoro and boat safaris. Shoulder seasons, before and after the peak inundation, offer a blend of land and water experiences, with exposed islands, new grazing areas and excellent game viewing. Zambia, Zimbabwe and Rwanda each have their own seasonal rhythms, influencing water levels, wildlife activity and photographic opportunities.

What to bring
A water-based safari calls for practical preparation. Neutral, light layers protect against early morning chills and midday sun; a rain jacket may be helpful to keep on hand, and a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses help with glare off the water. Binoculars are essential for spotting birds and distant wildlife, and waterproof bags or camera protection keep gear safe from splash-back.

Duration
Two to three nights at a camp that offers water activities can be added to a longer safari itinerary for contrast and calm, offering a slower, reflective pace between land-based game drives. Even a short stay allows you to experience mokoro journeys, boating, and riverside wildlife watching, leaving a lifelong impression from a bucket list holiday.

Combining experiences
Water-based safaris are most rewarding when paired with other landscapes. Combine Delta channels with the desert, or savannah, to experience contrasting ecosystems in one trip. Moving between waterways and land allows you to see wildlife from different perspectives while keeping your itinerary varied, dynamic and immersive.
