Wildlife wonders on Akagera’s Magashi Peninsula

April brought a different rhythm to life at Wilderness Magashi. The rains arrived, turning the landscape lush and green, and while this time of year usually means quieter sightings, April had a few surprises in store.

Despite the rains, wildlife activity remained remarkable. Our guests and guides experienced several unforgettable moments – some of them extremely rare in Akagera National Park.

One of the most exciting highlights was the sighting of Mahoro (one of the female lions reintroduced to Akagera National Park as part of Rwanda's conservation efforts). Mahoro has done an amazing job raising her cubs, and her male offspring, who had stayed close to her for nearly three years, are now venturing north in the park with their sisters.

Recently, our guides also witnessed Mahoro’s sons mating with females from the Northern Pride – a potential sign of a territorial takeover. The dominant males of that pride, who have held their ground for the past five years, were later seen in our Magashi Private Concession bearing fresh scars. These marks may be the result of a recent clash, hinting at an ongoing power shift among Akagera’s lions here in the north.

Another rare and beautiful sighting this month was of a roan antelope – also called the “horse antelope” for its strong build and elegant features. Roan antelope are elusive, and their population in Akagera is very small, making this a truly special moment for our guests and guides. Seeing one looking healthy and alert is a testament to the park's growing conservation success.

Our resident leopard also made a few memorable appearances in April. In March, we shared the update of her activity near Tent 8. Early this month, she was seen exploring the area near Tent 3, perhaps scouting new territory. However, it seems she preferred her old haunt, returning to Tent 8, where she was spotted fishing for catfish. Guests and guides were delighted to watch her in action, highlighting her unique hunting skills, even if she seemed a little shy with the audience.

Gratitude for our Magashi management

While April is typically a time when nature slows down, the spirit of our team remained unwavering. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our Magashi management team, whose dedication and passion shine through their tireless efforts, both behind the scenes and in daily interactions with staff and guests, ensuring that every visitor feels welcomed, appreciated, and truly part of the Magashi family.

Even in the quiet, rainy season, Magashi reveals its magic in subtle and powerful ways. We are grateful to all our guests who joined us in April and shared these extraordinary moments with us.

We look forward to the months ahead filled with new sightings, meaningful connections, and more unforgettable experiences in the heart of Rwanda’s wild beauty.
