Vibrant summer in Akagera

July was a vibrant and rewarding month at Wilderness Magashi – rich in wildlife activity, meaningful training, and guest satisfaction. With a close-to-full camp throughout the month, and nature putting on a spectacular show, it was a time of connection, learning, and unforgettable memories in the heart of Rwanda’s famed Akagera National Park.

Lion mom Mahoro’s new cub finally revealed

One of the most heartwarming and unforgettable moments this month was the first confirmed sighting of alpha female lion Mahoro and her precious new cub. Since giving birth in May, Mahoro had been keeping her little one safely hidden away. In June, she was spotted with the cub’s older female sibling, but not the new arrival – leaving us all wondering when we might catch a glimpse.

Then came a magical moment: our guides and our guests saw Mahoro walking alongside three tiny cubs. At first, we thought all three belonged to her, but nature had a lovely surprise. It turns out that only one cub is hers, and the other two belong to her older daughter. This discovery was made when guides observed Mahoro nursing one cub, while her daughter feeding the other two.

This rare and precious sighting was shared by a few lucky guests and guides – an emotional experience that reminded us of the deep bonds and quiet wonders of the wild.

Our guiding team continues to observe Mahoro, always keeping a respectful distance to ensure her peace and safety, while still giving guests the chance to witness these beautiful moments.

Male lions M7 and M9 reappear

In further thrilling big cat news, M7 and M9, two of the concession’s well-known dominant male lions were spotted again in the area. Once the undisputed rulers of this territory, their reign was marked by dramatic battles for dominance in heart-stopping encounters documented just two years ago

Eventually, younger, stronger males forced them to roam beyond their former range, displacing them. After some time away, their return has sparked great excitement among the guiding team, and there is some speculation that it’s possibly to spend their final seasons in the territory they once ruled. Time will tell.

Elephants return to Magashi Concession

Another highlight of our wildlife sightings in July was the return of elephants to our private Magashi Concession. Earlier in the year, these quiet giants had moved away in search of areas with abundant food and lush greenery. Now, with the dry season turning much of the bush yellow, Magahi’s unique landscape, surrounded by water and offering fresh vegetation along the lakeshore, has drawn them back. These majestic animals were seen moving through camp, wading into the lake, and were even seen swimming and feeding in front of guest rooms. Their calm yet powerful presence transfixed both guests and staff.

Guides’ development

Guide training remained a central focus this month. After last month’s impactful visit from Cilas (Wilderness Botswana Guide Trainer), we had the pleasure of welcoming Wilderness Namibia Guide Trainer Clement, who continued the development journey with our Trainee Guides.

Clement worked closely with the trainees, conducting field sessions, joining guest activities, and sharing his guiding philosophy and deep bush knowledge. His presence brought fresh insights and hands-on experience that will help shape the future of guiding at Magashi and Wilderness Magashi Peninsula, that is due to open later in the year.

We extend sincere thanks to Clement for his dedication, time, and mentorship. His guidance has added real value, and our trainees are growing in both skill and confidence with each new experience.

Celebrating teamwork and guest experiences

Behind every memorable guest experience is a team working with heart and intention. From expertly tracking wildlife to creating a sense of home in the camp, our Magashi team shows unflagging commitment.

This month, we have seen trainee guides learning in real time, seasoned guides sharing their expertise, and guests forming connections not only with nature, but also with the stories and culture of Rwanda. We are proud of how far our team has come and excited for what is next.
