Hoanib Skeleton Coast

The wild Skeleton Coast National Park encompasses a 500 km long, 40 km wide stretch of seemingly barren desertscape on Namibia’s Atlantic coastline. This is a hostile but fascinating land of shipwrecks, seals, and endless sand.

The Skeleton Coast serves up ghostly scenes where through a fog of sea mist, the sun-bleached skeletons of ships dot the coastline. Among them the skeletons of seals and whales, giving the area its name, while also attracting some of the world’s rarest desert predators.

The atmospheric beaches of Skeleton Coast National Park are unmissable. While not dangerous for you to visit, the Skeleton Coast is famed as the largest ship graveyard in the world. Many sailors have met their demise here due to the dense fogs and frequent storms that batter the coastline.

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is one of our most remote Namibia camps – a six-tent set-up where the Hoanib River meets Skeleton Coast National Park, in a landscape of extraordinary geological drama and rarity. This is the only permanent camp with access to both the Skeleton Coast wilderness and the dry Hoanib River ecosystem, creating the most diverse desert wildlife experience in Namibia: desert-adapted lion, elephant, giraffe, brown hyena, gemsbok, and the dramatic Skeleton Coast's coastal birds and marine life.

Desert-adapted lions are Hoanib's most prized sighting – a population of lions that have evolved over generations to cover vast distances through the desert without fresh water, surviving on marine life (seals, fish stranded by waves) on the Skeleton Coast itself. Desert-adapted elephants move through the Hoanib River seasonally. Brown hyena – one of Africa's rarer carnivores – are sometimes encountered. The coastal day trip to the Skeleton Coast delivers Cape fur seal colonies, perhaps a diminutive black-backed jackal patrolling the shore, and the haunting atmosphere of one of Africa's most forbidding coastlines. 

Yes – the Skeleton Coast day trip is one of Hoanib's signature activities. Guests fly by light aircraft, or drive (depending on weather) to Möwe Bay. The experience includes Cape fur seal colonies, the remnants of a shipwreck, and the extraordinary contrast of Atlantic breakers against the Namib Desert. This is included in stays of three nights or more. 

Hoanib is one of our most remote Namibia properties. The nearest town (Sesfontein) is several hours' drive over rough terrain. Guests access the camp only by light aircraft – landing at the dedicated Hoanib Airstrip within the concession. Mobile phone coverage is absent; the camp operates via satellite communication.

The cooler months (May to September) are ideal for desert wildlife viewing, when animals concentrate along the Hoanib River and conditions are most comfortable. October to November can be very hot. The Skeleton Coast day trip operates year-round, weather permitting. Desert-adapted lions are recorded across all months as their ranges shift with prey movement – no season guarantees or excludes a sighting.
