Akagera wildlife

Akagera’s landscapes are rich & vibrant, with wetlands and lakes that shimmer with wild activity year-round. The park is home to leopard, elephant, buffalo, Masai giraffe, zebra, & more. Magashi Peninsula also holds the intrigue of the rare and remarkable: lesser-known antelope like oribi and the elusive sitatunga, white and black rhinos and tree-climbing lions. Here, unusual isn’t the exception.

Conservation in Akagera

Far beyond a luxurious retreat, Magashi Peninsula offers a transformative experience, deeply rooted in purpose and inspired by Rwanda’s sole high-end savannah refuge.

As part of the Magashi Peninsula development, Wilderness works closely with the Akagera Management Company – a collaboration between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks – to support essential conservation initiatives, including predator monitoring, invasive plant management and educational programmes for the next generation of conservationists.

Community engagement

Magashi Peninsula’s impact reaches far beyond its shoreline, deeply rooted in empowering the neighbouring communities. Many team members come directly from the surrounding villages, bringing local knowledge and talent into the heart of the camp. Three Rwandan guides from sister camp Magashi are also the first in the country to earn FGASA qualifications, including Rwanda’s first female FGASA-certified guide, highlighting Wilderness’ commitment to meaningful skills development. Additionally, through Children in the Wilderness (CITW), we partner with schools and families in nearby Akayange village, supporting education and long-term community upliftment that grows hand-in-hand with conservation.
